It was at Reno's Stead, unauthorized T/O. I'm really surprised the pilot didn't see that coming and aborted, even his 2 wingmen?

Probably too hyped up and ready to race, and forward vision is lousy on take-off with a tail dragger.

That's a scary incident. I think it happened at Reno. He had engine trouble, opened the canopy and signaled the problem. The other airplanes didn't see the red flag. Here's a larger version:
