This made me a little sad. I saw a picture of the first F-16 converted to a QF-16 drone that missiles are shot at, and recognized it as one of the planes I photographed around 30 years ago when it was young and in its glory.
I'm still sorting through the thousands of aircraft pictures I was taking 30 years ago, and was thinking about some of the planes, how they were old then, yet still fly and serve to this day.
How about the KC 135 first flew in 1956. B52 first flew in 1952. T38 first flew in 1959. U2 in 1956 and the C130 in 1954?
Who would have thought planes 70 years old would still be front line military aircraft today.
I was in DC for a conference last week and took some time to visit the Smithsonian Air & Space museums. The museum on the national mall is still half closed for renovations which was a bit disappointing, but the Udvar-Hazy annex out by Dulles more than made up for it.
Some of my favorites...
SR-71 - one of the sexiest aircraft imho
F-4 - my dad used to work on these
F-35B STOVL and the vectoring nozzle on the F135 engine that I worked on
One of the more cumbersome appearing aircraft, the ME232 was originally designed as a towed glider for troop transport.
It did succeed in having the highest capacity of any aircraft that took off from land during the war.
However, it was also pretty slow. So it had several gun emplacements, including in the wings.
As well, there were cabins inside those thick wings for flight engineers to monitor the engines.
Even though it was underpowered and had a short range, it was very useful in moving equipment to needed places, especially in areas where shipping was getting too hazardous to be reliable. As a troop transport, it could carry 130 at a time.
