Introduced for 1968, the Beechcraft Duke was a stylish twin engined light aircraft with retractable gear and a pressure cabin. It looked sleek with its pointed nose and raked tail.

Performance wasn't so spectacular though, even with a pair of 380 hp. Lycoming engines. And the engines were both fuel thirsty, and expensive to overhaul (around $55,000 each these days). Even so, the plane was popular enough to remain in production until 1983.

To overcome some of the deficiencies, Rocket Engineering in Spokane, Washington has made a conversion package that uses P&W Canada PT6A turboprop engines, called the Royal Turbine Duke. Performance increases are remarkable; climb rate more than doubled to 4,000 pfm, take off distance dropped from 2,626 down to just 1000 feet, and it's a much quieter aircraft now. Top speed jumped from 230 knots to 300.
