Yup, boils down to funding and manpower...
Heck: Edwards AFB doesn't even have an Air Show anymore!
I tried to talk my boss into letting CE erect scaffolds so the CAP could arrange for volunteers to do the cleaning and polishing for free. Boss (Mission Support Group commander) said no to the free cleaning. He didn't want to ask the wing king for permission to do this - what a weenie!

Too many weenies in the USAF any more. McGuire's successive Services Squadron commanders successively closed the base pools, bowling alley, recreation center, mini-golf course, officers club, aeroclub, and demolished nearly all tennis courts, RV camping park, all mobile home parks, etc.. Each of the SVCS commanders said that each was losing money, so to fix them, they closed each one. I was taught that to fix something meant to make it right, not to close or demolish it. What is a services squadron that has no services left???!

Too right. I mean, the entire USAF should be shut down with that logic, it isn't making money for the government, is it. May as well close up the Navy as well when you think about it. You could build a whole fleet of profitable cruise liners for the price of an aircraft carrier. What were they thinking?

I guess it hadn't occurred to them that having those tennis courts, rec centers and the rest might contribute to improved moral and even...(gasp) enlistment.
