The very first aircraft to fly with a turbojet engine, the experimental Heinkel 178 first flew under its own power in August 1939, nearly two years after the first turbine engine was first run.

Eventually managing speeds of 435 mph. (700 km/h) the prototype was sent to a museum in Berlin. It was later destroyed during bombing raids.

This is a more recent replica on display at the Rostock-Laage Airport.

First flown in 1974, the Rockwell B-1 had a rocky start before entering service in 1986. Despite getting a little old, it is still distinguished by its ability to carry a larger weapon load than any other bomber in the US Air Force fleet.
