Why Blackouts on the Nose

Why do the Blackouts exist and why are they larger than the headlight areas? Just wondering,

That's easy, black noses matter.

They painted Pete Hamilton’s nose red to tell the Petty team cars apart quickly. Maybe why they did this to street birds. It looks good, and you can quickly tell it from a Daytona from a distance.

I thought the red nose signals that the pilot was black.
