I think because there was a certain 'rebel mystique'
about them back in the day, like 'the bad boys'
They were cool, had a mean look & reputation
they had a distinctive sound too
I remember them well from the drags, my stepdad took me too
the fastest S/S-ers, fuel altereds & dragsters, were all HEMIs
They weren't just the 'Run of the Mill' everyday cookiecutter cars
Fairlane, Mustang, Camaro, Chevelle etc., everyone else had
(albeit I've owned them too)
They were far fewer of them on the road
My 1st real road car was a
68 Charger R/T GG1 black top & guts
I spent a lot of time when young with my Great Uncle Tink,
he was a truck driver (my dad's uncle) had a cool Gold & Black
58 Desoto Adventurer 392 Hemi 2 dr HT, until he died 1998-ish
he always drove it fast, he'd let me sit on his lap & steer it
his wife my Aunt Anne had a big ol' 300 Chrysler (65 ?),
then a 68 Polara convertible
then later Demon 340 4 speed, later a Duster 360
she was like the lil' old lady from Bethel Island
his/her sons, all a few years older than me, I really looked up to;
John had a 68 Barracuda Formula S 383 4 speed
Jim had a 68 (or 69) GTS 383 4speed
& Pete had a 71 Duster 340 4 speed...
My mom had a 57 Savoy 2 dr wagon
I was brought home from the hospital in originally...
My stepfather Bob had a 60 Dart Phoenix 383
when he married my mom, when I was 6 y/o
(he also owned a cool 35 Ford PU, 64 GTO, 49 Indian)
My Mom's 1st new car was a 68 Sport Satellite 383 4bbbl 4 speed,
she/they ordered new, I was right there when they made the deal
& when we picked it up too (I was 8 y/o)
they were all MoPar people
I was destined to be a MoPar gearhead
almost all my friends early on in HS,
we all had
either 68-70 RR's or 68-70 Charger R/T's
we were sort of the MoPar gang from Georgetown
Most of my racer friends had MoPars too,
some trucks, some PowerWagon
even US that had Brand X racecars, had a MoPar streetcar
