Having that dash doesn't mean it was air conditioned. One of the available options was 'Upper level Fresh-air ventilation' which used the same center dash vents for outside air but without having A/C installed. It would be interesting to see if this showed up on the build sheet.
 
The seller was an honest straight shooter who bought it along with two other project cars sight unseen from a body shop who had a mechanics lien on it for work they did and were not paid for - hence the title issue. I have a title in the works.

OK, I see lots of red flags here, so perhaps someone can educate me better...

My understanding of a mechanics lien is this: If they don't get paid for work they have done, they can then get legal right to sell the car to recoup their costs. They have to have an unpaid bill that they justify this with. When the car is sold, if there is money left over above the amount owed, that goes to the owner that didn't pay their bill.

EITHER WAY, SHOULDN'T THERE BE SOME DOCUMENTATION THAT PROVES A MECHANICS LIEN??? A mechanic can't just sell a customers car without legal justification to do so.

Without a paper trail, I would be afraid that the original owner could come back and claim it is till their car...

I may certainly be misunderstanding how a mechanic's lien works, so please educate me here...
 
In OK, anyway, we have what's called a Title 42 procedure, which is a mechanic's lien. A certified letter to the last registered owner is sent. If no reply, the car goes up for sale for the amount owed. What the car sells for is what it sells for. If no buyer, then the person filing the Title 42 keeps the car and gets full title and tag for it. The previous owner has NO say if they did not acknowledge the certified letter within 30 days of their signed receipt, and gets NO money, regardless. Once the lien is filed, he essentially relinquishes the vehicle if he does not pay the bill in full.
 
The non-factory rivets holding the VIN scream "Run away!!!"

I didn't think that aluminium would 'rust' like that :D ...and the rosette parts of the rivets appear to have been filled in.
 
Didn't this car sell like four months ago. What made the car a piece of ****? I know most of you guys started with worse and or less. The fact that it was an airgrabber, super bee that might be a six pack would have been worth something to me. Given the high price commanded for less desirable cars on eBay today, just made me wonder. Is it so wrong to be curious? Beyond this issue, I also can't help but wonder why this thread has survived so long after the car sold.

The thread was reserected on the 7th of January by the gentleman who purchased it. Each post has a date. Reference it.

You are correct that many on here have started with less. Banging away on it in the shop to produce something amazing beats staying in the house arguing with the wife. I think it's a worthwhile project.

I didn't see any pics of the dash VIN tag and rivets. with that said that does appear to be a replacement A/C dash. The strato vent dash did not have the vent on the left side. Still possibly a fixable ride.
 
Kudos to Mr. Jones for wanting to save this car. I've seen a lot of people take on much worse. It's awesome that the vin matches the numbers on the body. Some one probably changed out the dash but the important thing is that the original vin tag stayed with the car.

I want to see the resto thread on this car, I was really thinking about buying it when the price appeared so low. You really got a good deal on a pretty nice car
 
Thanks guys - that's exactly where my head was at when I took the leap. It will get there and to those that were questioning it - trust me I did too - I have seen some shady deals in my 30+ years in this hobby/work. Meeting the seller at his place of work and seeing he was a professional owner of a new car dealership made me more at ease and confirming the hidden vins, having the fender tag and a signed bill of sale on his dealership paperwork - and he had the title in the works, so I am comfortable. It will get done and done right but it will take some time. As soon as I start tearing it apart I will start a restoration thread. Right now it is wrapped up tight to shield it from the elements outside as I finish another project in my garage/shop. Once the weather warms I will get it on the rotisserie outside so I can media blast the whole thing to kick it off right.
