Why someone would want to cut a hole in the floorboard this big is beyond me...

(doesnt appear to be for rust repair) The car was an automatic and changed to a 4 speed at some point, only guess is the guy just went to town with a torch to get it swapped. May have been the reason that the last owner to actually drive it, stopped driving it.

Cause crack was cheap back when that work was done and nobody had started smoking bath salts yet........gotta love progress

Hurst ram rod shifter !!! That's what it loos like, well maybe a little bigger. I have one that will go in a car someday, need a nasty hole in the floor, but the shifter is bad *** !!

When I bought my 62 Plymouth 30+ years ago it had a hole in the floor for a ram rod shifter that big, but they left the cross support.

I like the automatic style brake pedal that's still in it along with the clutch pedal....not! Do they touch each other? Also, a hole that big isn't needed for a V-gate shifter....

If you look close someone hacked off part of the brake pedal. They probably used the same device that ate the hole in the floor.

Some guys were (are) idiots....

That is why God gave us humans the ability to make moonshine!

And, why some idiots make "Bad-Moonshine" and go blind and die...

God is simply allowing the "Gene Pool" to be thinned every once in a while!

Maybe the previous owner wanted to pull the gearbox, and didn't own a jack? At least he had a gas torch. Either way that's a nasty hole.

Easy to work on n commit suitcide with carbon moxiode poison.

Could be some one needed that side of the tunnel to fill a hole and thought this was a parts car.

maybe he could't reach the two top tranny bolts LOL

Maybe he thought you install the transmission from the top through the floor!

You're very observant :headbang: No they dont touch.

What it looks like the guy did was just bend up the lip on that side...very curious. I'm not sure why he didnt just trim a little off each side....Oh well... BUT...

What do you guys think I should do about it? Should I just get a new assembly? Are the assemblies the same, only that one has a big brake pedal and no clutch and the other has a clutch and small pedal, but are otherwise the same? This is not going to be a high dollar build, but rather fix the patchwork, address the rot and make her drivable again.

Maybe it was Fred Flintstone's car !!!!

Like the guy said at the strip bar....Thats a REALLY big hole!

A friends car had this same thing done to it, '70 dart , someone put a b/e body trans in it.
The theory was it must have a been a chevy or ford guy to have not had the concept of the how the torsion bar suspension depended upon the anchor/cross member.
If they had any sense, just a drop, they could have fab'd a bracket to bring the shifter forward from the rear/tail shift mounting pad.

but to go along with the the theme... maybe the shift tab bolts came lose so much that he was tired of going underneath the car to tighten them and made a short cut :icon_profileleft:

Finally tracked down a previous owner who can attest to it having at one point a Hurst Ram Rod Shifter... WELL DONE.
