Why would anyone buy a new economy car?

I mean it's got 4,300 miles on it it and it's poised to appreciated. Buy a used Camry for $2000 and drive the other on the weekends. Not trying to tout Camaros on a Mopar site just using this as an example.

Your logic is somewhat flawed to a lot of people and there's good reason. Sometimes you have to spend money to save money especially when the cost of gasoline and repairs are concerned. Safety is another factor and people want a car that takes care of their substandard driving habits like "lane departure", air bags, AWD, predictive cruise control etc. But for the most part, unless you have deep pockets or a lacking sense of practically, the best car you can buy is the one that most closely matches your life style at that given time. So someone will snatch up that Camaro SS for sure but it won't be someone who has a large family, mortgage that's overbearing and bills plastered all over their fridge because that car will be another added expense.

An Engineer who I've been working for lately calculated that if more than 50% of people in NZ go and buy an Electric car, we will need to double the amount of electricity generation infrastructure to cope with the added demand on the National Grid. Our Greenies won't allow Nuclear power, or oil/coal fired generators, wannabe rural lifestyle whacko's won't allow more suitable valleys to be flooded and turned into Hydro dams.....and wind turbines are so noisy that no-one wants them near where they live. We are screwed with electric cars....the amount of resource and raw materials that they consume to produce, and the amount of toxic by-product during their manufacture, is totally outweighed by their usefulness and so-called benefits to society.

Some folks spend a large part of their day commuting to and from work.
I would not be inclined to enjoy my BBody car this way.
I also would not take my BBody car out for a spin in the snow.

I have worked close to -and in-depth with the power generation industry for 45 years and gathered a good insight that the public only hears about from sound bites on the news.
Those that generate power for us are not evil.--They are us.

The enemy of "us" are those that have the least clue about the reality of and practical thinking about generating power.

What they want -comes from a dream they wake from.---I want this --and "make it so" a command is all they have. --Let's try this. --Let's banish that. etc.

I have a relevant question on this.

What is the consensus of -energy generating haters- as the best way forward?

My personal opinion is that nuclear power will answer 95% of the issues for clean power.
Unfortunately, an uninformed public-- irrationality puts too many into a panic at the very mention of the word "nuclear"

This is frankly odd considering that "nuclear" power actually runs everything we rely on daily as it is.
I admit that this pushes the meaning of the word "radiation". That is a big part of my point.

you see, I worked for the Air Force AND the DOD for many years
I was told to come to a REMOTE US Military site to work on ADVANCED PROJECTS
Consequences of this assignment is:
1. 45 Mile to the Nearest City with Hospital/ Logistics support
2. 90+ miles the Nearest Airport
3. California, highest Gasoline prices in the US, Above Hawaii AND Alaska
It goes on and on
so Dude., I do NOT live in your world, a Economy car solves the problem

Some of us buy a transport vehicle for that purpose.
I have a john deere tractor that will move right along with the SMV on the back but I chose to not commute with it to work. (BTW it would do just fine (or better) in many traffic commutes).

Firstly that Camaro is an auto ! So looses points there ! My eco car gets 39 mpg and I have AC and ac in my seat ! I also can zip by a cop doing 10-15 over the speed limit in my sonata and he doesn't far if I was in that Camaro I'd get a ticket for 5 over just because . Back seats fairly useless in that car too!

Most people need to finance cars too that makes a big deciding factor for them too.
I went with the sonata as I needed baby seat room and my wife wanted air bags everywhere!

Late model Mopars with the 5.7 "hemi" routinely get over 20mpg on the highway/rural driving.
Ours does - I've seen it push 29mpg on trips.
It also has all the amenities, is quite well built (highest crash test ratings) and makes all those cool NASCAR sounds
when you get on it.
It'll do for a daily driver.

I pity the Kia owners of the world - especially when that thing gets some miles on it.
They get a crash course on "reliability" first time it breaks - and it will.

Bingo... I consistently do routine maintenance on Hyundai and Kia vehicles well over 100k miles, VERY rarely do they have problems. Hell, everyone I know who asks for a new vehicle recommendation I say Hyundai or Kia, they are very well built vehicles now.

It's all about financing. The majority of people buying a 23k eco box are financing that vehicle for up to, wait for it...... 80mnths. Cars are becoming so overbloated with government mandated add on that even the supposed cheap ones are unobtainable by a large portion of the populous. Try finding a bank that will loan that same person the same 23k for a 20yr old vehicle no mater how low the milage.

That's great and all - but in the end, what they wind up with are *cough* Kias and Hyundais.
I thank God every day I wasn't led down that dismal vehicle owning road in life....

I'll stick up for the Pentastar here. I've bought and owned several new Mopar products since the mid 80's.
I've never *knock wood* had any major issue with any of them, with the exception of the '85 Shelby critter (GLH Turbo) I had.
I basically hotrodded that thing to death.
Cars, Rams, Grand Cherokees, you name it - nary an issue beyond basic maintenance.
There's three of 'em sitting around here right now (not counting the GTX) in fact.

I bought a 15K out the door 2015 Renegade for my 46 mile round trip to work, and to seat four adults comfortably and be able to haul decent sized loads while keeping them dry.

33.5 MPG average from the 1.4 turbo six speed manual, which is easy but fun to drive and has the same power to weight ratio as a mildly built 318 Duster.

Hyundai has always been decent quality but has stepped it up in the last 15 years.
Kia was crap for quite a while, but when Hyundai bought them, their quality went WAY up.
