Why would anyone do this?

I am not going to do anything to K frame. That is pretty solid. Just boxing in torsion bar crossmember. Tailshaft of trans will be a little bit lower than stock. Hopefully won't end up with any drivetrain vibrations.

Is that an A body 4 speed?

I don't think so. A Body 4 speed has a much longer tail shaft. Not sure if it is small block or big block transmission. I think they look pretty much the same on the outside. Input shaft may be dfferent??

A-Body is shorter, not longer. A-Body uses a 904 size yoke, A B/E Body uses a 727 size yoke.

I'll post a picture later.
Here are pictures. Any help identifying what it came out of?

That looks like a B-body due to the shifter pad location.

It's a 1966-69 B-body trans. Beginning with the '68 models, a small (3" X 7/8") raised machined pad was added to the main case, just above the casting numbers on the passenger's side. That way you can tell if it is 66-7 (no pad), or a 68-9 at least. The car's serial number, along with the transmission's build date (10,000 day Julian calendar code) and a 4-digit sequential production number are stamped into this pad on a 68-9 trans.

Would a 65 transmission have a different mount area on tail shaft? I'm still up in the air about modifying trans crossmember and was thinking about getting a 65 V8 K-frame that would move engine and trans back into the right position. I found one for $125 plus shipping.

For the same reason they might do this....

I am in process of putting in floor panels and have discovered that whoever put the 4 speed in my 65 Belvedere was a butcher. I already know that I have to get a real manual trans cross member and mount. When I get that will the transmission sit lower so that the shifter won't hit the frame part that is in the car. Everything is pushed up pretty high and the guy just cut away at the cross part that goes from rocker to rocker.

And the cross member that he fabricated is effed up too.

So I guess my question is: Will the right cross member and trans mount lower everything enough so that I can repair the chopped out part that he took out to clearance the shifter? Is this the right shifter for this? Or should I just say the heck with it and get an automatic for it? Do I need a different 4 speed?

Hey that looks like my car?? maybe you bought it from the same guy???? this after I fixed the hack job/

K fram motor mount

I am thinking that I am going to be changing the K frame. Not sure what got whacked off for motor mount perches but it also looks like steering box mount might be affected. Here is a shot of left motor mount area.left motor mount 1.JPGleft motor mount 2.JPG

That motor is back. The manual cross member and the automatic cross members are the same. Is it mounted with stock mounts? If so it's got a 66-70 K-frame. Buy an aftermarket trans hump ( Passon, Brewer) trim the floor and the torsion bar cross member, then box it. Reinstall the stock transmission cross member and fab a rear trans mount. The motor being rearward opens up better header choices and adds valuable fan to radiator clearance. Right idea, lousy execution.

62-5 has a different style tranmission mount. The 65 transmissions also have a flange at the tail end for a ball and trunion (detroit) style u-joint. That means finding a correct driveshaft. Schumacher makes a trans mount for the 62-5 cars using a 66 up trans, but with a correct original 65 V8 k-member.

And correct the clutch linkage Z-bar

After wavering back and forth about what to do I have decided to fix this the right way. I am getting the correct K frame from moparmark (along with a couple of other parts). I already got the correct trans cross member and mount from Passon. Just have to take front end apart and pull the motor.

Just couldn't bring myself to continue with hack job. Something about putting lipstick on a pig. It may look pretty but it is still a pig!

You'll always be happy when you know you've repaired something you didn't like. Good luck with the fan clearance though, they're tight.

Will probably lose the clutch fan. Headers will be tight also.

The fan clutch for '62 to '65 B body measures 2 3/4" it total height. They are rare but available. I have 2" tube TTI headers on my '62 convertible w/440 and they clear everything with no modifications.

Well it's been a while since I've been on but work is progressing. Motor is out and getting cleaned up. Stripping flat black paint from engine compartment. New k member ready to go in.

So here's my question. What vehicle did this K frame come out of?
