Hi Guys,

I bought a 65 Coronet. it has a fender tag but no VIN on the dash or door. What are my options to obtaining a Vin so i can register it. This was field/barn car. Hoping to be able to register it as this car is complete and running.

They had the VIN stamped in 2 different places besides the VIN tag on the door pillar....
On 1968 and earlier cars, the VON was stamped on the body in at least two places. Usually, this was stamped on the radiator core support and under the weatherstripping along the driver's side trunk extension.

Maybe I can help, seeing as I work as a motor vehicle investigator and deal with this almost daily. The process may vary from state to state, but typically your DMV will run a 50-state search to see if there are any previous records under your VIN. If there is, you may be required to do certified mailings to the last known owner in order for them to properly release their interest. Best case, nothing is returned and you can proceed with a conditional title application, which means the vehicle would be subject to other ownership claims for a period of time (3 years in the state I work for). You'll still get a title and be able to register though.

Again this may vary, but if there is no public VIN, the DMV may re-assign the fender VIN to a public location (A or B pillar). Fees for all of this are likely all over the map, but if you have no paperwork or bill of sale, expect to pay tax based on the fair market value of the vehicle, plus title, registration, etc.

Hope this helps...

Your VIN tag would be located on the drivers side lower door pillar. Not on dash or the door. Just want to clear that up

You can see it in this photo, look at door jamb/frame (left of the parking brake)

ok, update there is no vin on the pillar. i would prefer not to pry and glue a vin. I have not yet checked for a billed sheet.

Isn't the vin stamped on the block as well. If it's original. Long shot. But maybe. Also I will add I got the title on my 54 desoto as described above. Most salvage yards can do it or walk you through it. Called title 42 here in ok.

Nope.

Some states give a lot of flak on pre-68 Mopars because almost all statutes are written to include references to TWO legible VIN locations.

Pre-68 Mopars have only one. As stated earlier the VON number is in other locations but only one document ties the VIN to the VON, thus proving it's the same car.

Can be a royal pain and may not ever happen.

Sorry, not what you wanted to hear.

Find wrecked '65 Coronet, obtain title and pry off vin. Glue on your car. Register.[/QUOTE

I don't think I'd try that in California. Whenever I've had a problem I've taken the Bill of Sale and any other paperwork to the local DMV and explained the situation. They have been very helpful for the most part. Once, when the clerk was giving me excuses, I told her I felt ill and left. I then went to a different DMV and found someone to help me. Honesty is still the best policy and will usually get you positive results. Good luck.

Sometimes simply explaining what I said in post 15 will cause the DMV or the officer required to run a NCIC check to disengage and shut down the process.

Sucks, but that's the way it is.

Also regarding replacing the vin with another. Maybe that's why yours is gone. Somebody took it for that reason. And forged papers on a car is a big no no. I learned to not buy any vehicle without a title. Unless really good buy. It's not worth the mess. I got lucky once with dmv. But a bill of sale isn't worth the paper it's on. Not in ok anyway.

Not sure what state you're in, but many states (including the one I work for) will simply assign a generic VIN to a public location if no other identifiers are on the vehicle. Again, you may be required to assume responsibly and defend your ownership if it came to it (through a conditional title).
