1966 hemi carbs flooding

I'm having some major carb flooding issues. Actually leaking out and causing puddles on the intake.

This is in my front carb only


Can someone confirm if I have the secondary boosters in the correct sides?
Correct gaskets ?

Looks like the left booster has one, but not the right one...
 
Because of the way the carb body and boosters are cast, they will only go together one way. Check float settings. Shake float to determine if there is any fuel in it. Both boosters should have gasket under it. While it is apart, check front boosters too.
 
What fuel pump? Might want to verify the pressure.

Yes, just was not there when I took pictures. Found out Boosters only go in one way

Its a carter. But dont know which number or pressure

This issue just started recently
Pump has been on there close to 20 years.

Ordered a new carter M6903 today. While its down I'll go back thru the front carb . replace both floats while its down
 
Bill, did this just start or had the carbs been worked on recently? My carbs started flooding after I rebuilt them because I put new springs on the needles and figured they should be gapped pretty tight to the float tab in order to pull the needle down as the float dropped.

Big mistake. It just caused the needles to be pulled to the side and hang up open in the seat and the carb to flood out of the bowls. The springs need to be gapped pretty wide in order to let the needle stay aligned with the seat as the float moves up and down. I think some people just lose the springs all together and keep the float drop within specs.

This just started a few weeks ago and I just noticed the external flooding issue today. But a heavy gas smell has been prominent the past few weeks for a while after parking it in the garage

I went thru the carbs back in March while I had the intake off and made some valve adjustments
car was running pretty good but has developed a miss stumble much more prominent when cold in the recent 3 or 4 weeks
Saturday after a 200 mile round trip it got much worst. felt like a dead cylinder.

I did a compression ck today and all seems good lowest was in the 155 psi range, highest one was almost 170. Most were in the 16-165 range

Im going back thru the carbs this week and make sure I have everything right. Using the link you posted .
New floats this time, another set of plugs ( autolite AR52s ) and have a new fuel pump ordered ( Carter M6903 .) all should be here tomorrow ( gotta love Amazon )
 
There aren’t many ways a Carter can really flood other than through the needle and seat and out through the bowl vents unlike a Holley. So it just about has to be something like fuel pressure, bad needle and seat or float issue. If you get stuck, PM Dragon Slayer as he is really helpful on the Hemi carbs.
 
Dave @ Woodruff does alot of those carbs and has a few sets he's doing in his shop right now. And he tests them wet on his engine before he sends them back to you ! He built me a set for my 63 Max Wedge and made almost 50 hp and 30 ft. lbs. over the 750's we started with on the dyno. No B S

Installed a small inline fuel pressure gauge inplace of one of the fuel filters

Sitting right at 5.5psi fuel pressure

I'll be installing a metal inline filter back near the tank in its place.

Waiting on a case of Driven high zinc oil to be delivered later this week before driving it to much

This was on Front carb only


New floats ( although the originals had no signs of fuel in them )
Another set of needle - seats

Paid real close attention to float adjustments and positions. I set them to the specs in the OEM service manual. Not the sheet in the kit

Cleaned it out real good with brake clean and compressed air

Ran a compression ck, Lowest one was 155, highest one is 170. most were in the 160-165 psi range

Another set of spark plugs , Autolite AR52s , this set gapped at .035 instead of the preset gapped at .045

Made sure both sets of points were gapped right

I did put a new coil on it for good measure
 
The car has always had a slight bog if I stomped it hard, Once Im sure all is good.
I plan to get some metering rod / jet kits and try to fine tune it some.


A friend of mine has spare hemi carbs.
Ive actually toyed with the idea to pick up a spare set and have them gone thru by someone with a little more knowledge than me

Are you sure that it’s not leaking through the throttle shafts? I think that I had heard somewhere that when they wear they could leak but I would think that they would leak air in and not fuel out. Also they would leak when the engine was running as the air/fuel was flowing past the shafts. While you have the carb off the car hook an electric fuel pump to it and confirm were the leak is. If it doesn’t leak it has to be the shafts I would think.
