1968 Roadrunner refresher

Also....I figured out I am going with the original EE1 color myself as well. Had it mixed up last week and going to do a spray out this week on it to ensure my choice, but I am 98% sure I am sticking with the original EE1 over the QQ1. The original QQ1 formula was only available in Deltron DBU which is being discontinued, and he only had enough to do a quart and then try and color match it with a camera (that's if I even liked the color it produced). I don't need another color debacle like I had on my yellow 68 Charger, so I have decided that the original shade is a great color and I am sticking with it. I have seen some QQ1 formulas I don't care for so not going to mess with it. @Jerry Hall, I believe the 68 color is a bit different in formulas as they listed differently. There is more blue and less purple tint in the 68 version as you'll see in my sprayout when I do it this week. It's damn close, but I have seen a few 68's now and see the difference in the color which is subtle but enough to make me go for it.
I think maybe you are making the best choice for yourself. That QQ1 is a little dicey on coming out the way you want it...Too many things that can affect the fianal color. Heck, I am not 100% sure my current QQ1 is exactly the same as in 1968................Good Luck .........................MO

Got more mud done today and welded up a little hole in quarter and the extra holes in firewall that were drilled over the years. Also swapped the steelies back on for the primer and paint work.

For those who don’t do bodywork it probably doesn’t look like much but we got 98% of the dents and everything straight as an arrow today and also stripped some more **** off the car. I got the rear trunk and cowl panel both stripped and ready for primer and both sail panels perfect and ready to go. We also stripped paint from a lot of the small nooks and crannies and **** which takes forever. I sure as hell am not going to win any races here but when it’s done it should be pretty damn nice I hope.

So I am not a bodywork guy (yet - I want to learn more), but I do appreciate the time and effort it takes to get these things straight and nice.

Nice work on the body - this will all be worth it once it gets paint!

Yea I am pretty good but my dads an ace so he is very particular with this car especially because I’ll probably never get rid of it. I’ll be painting this time next year because I’ll be priming and blocking twice but got the engine cleanup and paint and the dash to restore to keep me busy from fall to spring. Don’t want to shell out my $1500-$2000 or so on materials until spring plus I wanna let the bodywork and primer set up good before the final blocking and paint.

Spent the day sanding the car and then spraying it with etch primer and two coats of high build. Now it’s time to let it sit for a while and go on vacation for a few weeks on different camping trips while the body shrinks and dries and does it’s thing.

Nothing too exciting, just
More blocking. I blocked out the first coat of primer on the trunk lid, the top, and the cowl. I also took the car to my buddies last weekend and steam cleaned the engine bay. Now I won’t drag grease around when I start sanding the engine bay. I did some test spray outs of colors and the expensive PPG deltron original EE1 code is the winner! Tried a camera match of it but it blows. People swear by them but the camera just can’t pick up some of these colors and the flop that they do.

Your pic makes me ask, why did Ma Mopar use two different size speakers in the rear package tray? I had to exchange my speakers because of that..............................MO

They are not different sized speakers. One is for a speaker, and the other opening is an air vent intake for a rear defroster, if optioned that way.

Remember, this is from the days when AM radios ruled. Stereo speakers weren't happening yet! The big ticket radios had a mono speaker in the front and a mono speaker in the rear.

Well now, that makes sense.... I did use both holes for my speakers, but had to make a spacer for the larger hole..........................MO

the slot in the middle close to the glass is where the vent for the defroster was. Same as C Bodies.

I'm thinking the other hole that looks like a speaker hole , may be to intake interior air and be the blower motor mounting? .......................................MO

QQ1, one year only, gotta say I'm a big fan ;)
It took a ton of money to get this 68 RR looking like new. But the final results are worth it. The color really pops!

Just curious, what did you use to strip the paint? I used aircraft stripper years ago and the fumes made me **** my britches. I may be trying this again and don’t want to wear a diaper when I do.

A friend of mine has a small restoration shop. I've helped him tear down a few cars. He uses a razor scrapper to take off paint. No fumes, no chemicals to deal with. I liked it a lot better than the strippers I used to use.

Glad to see another QQ1 electric blue fan . I ordered a new 1968 Roadrunner from the factory , in that color with a black vinyl top. I will try to attach some pics of my recently completed 1968 Sport Satellite. From the outside, it looks like my 68 Roadrunner did. Inside stock interior is same as GTX.......MO

That is true but the new package tray from AMD had two sets of hole and a 6x9 speaker bolted rite up. I was going to put the defrost fan in but what the hell would rather have the speaker for now. Maybe later will make a trans. box so I can mount the fan and speaker their. Just want to get the car finished. Keep up the work.
