1969 Charger R/T resurrection

Yes it is an AMD glass. I did see somewhere else a guy claimed they were thinner than originals, but they were able to get it to seal. I bought the glass from this same guy doing this install for my last 2 cars, and he was able to get them to seal. Maybe I should just say screw it and buy another windshield - this time from him?

If he's a glass guy I'd say yes, get the glass from him. He more than likely doesn't get glass from AMD. If I was at work I could look up the NAGS glass number. Oh, tell your insurance that you were mowing lawn and kicked up a rock and broke your windshield. ha ha ha

Well the #@$^*&^%^&* windshield still leaks. I am getting so frustrated with this that I told the wife it is going out by the road with a for sale sign in it. 69 Charger, no rust, new tires. Make offer. As you can imagine, this did not go over well.
The glass guy has also had enough of this car, but is coming back mid next week to pull it out and start over. If any of you have any suggestions, I would really appreciate it. I started another thread just for this problem hoping that we have a windshield expert on this board that can give some input.

You've got to be kidding H2E . . . ARGH ! ! ! . . . that really sucks . . . So much for crossing my fingers ! ! !

The glass guy hasn't made it out to fix mine yet but the way I look at it is if the glass is to thin which seams to be a common problem than there are only 3 options, a gasket made for it, thicker glass and what I'm hoping for which is fill the groove full of Butyl Rubber. Don't really see any other options, maybe this is why AMD wants $500.00 for they're windshields (they're actually made right). Good luck and let me know what you figure out because we're in the same boat.

Are you sure your guy is using Butyl? Seems everybody is using urethane now. I've heard of some using 3M 8509 on these older cars. We need to know the best product out there that will bond to the paint in the channel, the rubber gasket, and the glass.

Thought I better get this thread updated a little bit. I got the rear reflector bezels back and couldn't be happier with the color match to the stripe.

I also got the King Kong workbench finished up. It is a brute, that's for sure. I used 7 gauge for the top which if I remember correctly is about .19" thick. I welded up and ground smooth the corners. I then cut a piece of 3/4" plywood to go between the base and top, mostly to quite the thing down when pounding on it. I then welded 11 1/4" studs to the bottom of the top, stuck these through the plywood and base, and locknuted it all together. Then soaked it with wd40 for a couple of days and wiped off the excess. Turned out pretty decent if I do say so myself. It did turn out a little heavier than I thought it would, but at least I shouldn't have to worry about anybody walking off with it lol.

H2E . . . Love the bench, I'm sure it's going to get a lot of use ! ! !

And back to the windshield from hell. It was pulled out early last week. I spent 2 evenings cleaning out all the urethane we had put in previously.

I pulled out all the clips and put a dab of 3m strip caulk on the threads.

And after a bunch of research, decided to go with this 3m bedding compound. This stuff reminds me of roofing tar, but doesn't dry out. It stays quite soft actually. The reasoning behind this is that these cars flex, and need some give to prevent leaks in the future. The urethane used on todays cars create a bond between glass and body that is actually relied upon as part of the structure of the car - very different than these 69 and earlier cars need.

So right or wrong, this is what I did and it is not coming out again. First we put a small bead along the top and side pinch welds. We placed the gasket over these areas, and then laid a bead along the lower channel with extra in the lower corners. Got the gasket placed where we wanted it. Then a bead was put in the glass channel along the bottom and about 6 inches up each side. Finally time for the glass to go in. It was a little difficult because of all the sealer, but we got it in. We then shot a little more sealer into each bottom corner after sealing the zip of the gasket. No doubt about it, this was a piss poor design to seal a windshield that Ma Mopar had devised. Just having a pinch weld along the bottom channel would have made a world of difference imo.

Finished windshield install looks great and so does that nice wood grain steering wheel .. envious :)

I feel your pain Hunt, I told the glass guy about your car and he said he wasn't even going to touch it until he had another windshield on hand incase he broke mine taking it out. He's planning on taking it out and putting Liquid Butyl in all of the grooves before putting it in again. I'm hoping your frustrations will result in mine only being fixed once but I'm not going to hold my breath. Good luck

I hope everything works out its just a small set back to the completion off your project thanks for the heads up on this problem im sure ill have a few choice words when at this stage. To bad you couldnt apply a sealer to the paint surface to help seal the gasket. Bed liner sounds good but you have to work to quick as this stuff dries to quick

I feel I did the best job possible this time around and actually feel pretty good about it now. It's just a terrible design that is just asking for leak issues. The other problem is that it is hard finding anybody familiar with these older designs, willing to put them in, and the little tricks of the trade to try to prevent water leaks. I think I will have to find somebody else, or do my own next time because this guy said he is done with this style from now on. Wonder if it is just this car because the kid told me this is the last car like this he is doing also LOL.

Also got the interior buttoned up. A little dirty, but it is done.

All I can say is WOW H2E . . . inside and outside look incredible, looks like you're about ready to be putting some miles on the "Bad Boy" very shortly.

Sure hoping you finally got that windshield the way you need it ! ! ! ( notice I did not use the "L" word ! ! )

So does it leak????

Nope. I think it is finally sealed up :hello2:.

I promised the kids I would take them fishing today. If we get back early enough this afternoon, I'm thinking about having a friend come over and hold a fire extinguisher while I turn the key for the first time :headbang:. Got pictures sent to the insurance company on Friday so it is insured just in case things don't go smoothly lol.

Congrats on the windshield and fingers crossed that one is behind you for good!

Looking forward to hearing how first fire-up goes if it runs half as good as it looks it will be like a brand new car!!
