1969 Road Runner....another one!

It's been about 10 days since my last update.

I practiced a bit more welding...started feeling comfortable with what I was doing....trying to get my welder and I in unison.

I started to prepare the rear passenger side footwell.

Then, it was time to finally weld in my first piece of sheet metal. That's when all hell broke lose.

I get the pan in position after tweaking it a bit. Clamped in place, ear plugs in and welding helmet on. (ie: I can't hear or see ****) I run thru all 18-20 plug welds...bouncing back and forth from side to side as to not warp it. Take off my helmet...and something didn't look right. The welds didn't look anything like I practiced....they weren't bonding and were popping once I removed the grips. I couldn't figure it out...blamed it on the weld-thru primer from Eastwood. They say it's some sort of organic blend...I don't know. But, I couldn't weld thru it...it sent splatter everywhere. ok...grind it all down and try again...same results. Frustrated, I get out of my car and that's when I see it....my argon tank on the ground...regulator busted and an empty tank. About $60 worth gone. I guess at some point, I pulled the torch knocking it over...I obviously don't remember doing that, but I couldn't see or hear anything. It was just a flux core welder at that point and I didn't realize it. I litteraly was able to pull the pan off with no pressure...the dang thing nearly fell off. Instead of rolling the car into the yard and setting it on fire, I ended up walking away for 2 days. Friday and Saturday sent me to the store for more gas and another regulator.

Yesterday, I decided to try it again. This time with no primer. I'm not sure what the initial problem was...the primer or the lack of gas, maybe a combination of both?

But, after cleaning everything up, it's firmly in place now. I sure hope I got the measurments correct. Again, I had no help to put the full floor pan in for an accurate alignment of the back pan, so I just took a bunch of measurments for the alignment and did the best I could. Maybe I should have waited until I had help, but I was bored yesterday and wanted to do something.

Looks like it turned out good in the end Capt. Main issue....no shielding gas. The welds would have been full of porosity and have been a royal pain in the rear to puddle in with no shielding from the elements.

As far as the Eastwood primer....couldn't tell you how great/poor it is...never used it. I use the SEM zinc weld-thru primer without issues. Some folks use the copper. Eastwood makes some good stuff/some bad. When it comes down to using primers, sealers, paints ect...ect.. Your almost always better off using the higher end proffessional stuff made by 3M, PPG, SEM, Evercoat..ect...ect. You truely do get what you pay for. Not to say cheaper/off brand products can't perform, cause some of them most definitely do, but sticking with the proffessional series takes a lot of doubt out of it if you don't have time or want the unknown of dealing with a off the wall product.

Hey...at least you got it in and walked away when needed. You also learned what it's like welding without gas and should be able to pick up on such a problem down the road. Learning curve buddy!

HI capt,I just installed the floor in my roadrunner.I have onley been welding for one year.Like you i'm self tought so i can empathize. Most of the guys on fbbo are incouraging thats what we all need. I never thought three years ago when i bought the car that i would replace the floors, inner fender, trunk pan,and both quarter panels.keep up the good work. :headbang:

Good work on the floor pan. Now go buy or build yourself a proper welding cart so the tank will move with the welder and can't fall over.

I've used the Eastwood primer and the welds I've made with it burned in just fine.

welding spots look good.Did you get the full front floor pan, or the two piece?

Thanks! I ended up going with the full floor pan. It needs a little bit of work...some trimming and some bending, but it looks pretty good sitting in there. I'll get to that in the next week or so.

Wow....it's been a couple months. I don't have anything to report on the car.

The baby came early and I've had my hands tied....it's been one hell of a hot summer anyway..making working in the garage miserable. Things are slowly stating to return to normal and I hope to get some time soon. We got Mopar Nationals this weekend and I need to pick up a few things. Give me a shout if any of you plan on attending the show...I'd like to put some faces together with some names.

Thanks Jeff! We need to get together and drink some beers...

I ran out of sheilding gas the other day....need to mark an hour out of my schedule to run to get more. OTherwise, the floor pan would have already been in. This body work is time consuming...I never thought I would have this much time in it already. And, I haven't even started on the rear of the car yet. Maybe 4 years was too optimistic.

well with two little ones,, time will fly,, my little one is 6 now!! and I look back to see what i have FINISHED of MINE in 6 years,, NOT much.... but still plugging away on other people s cars etc... got to make HAY when you can now a days!! jc:upside down:

aahh BEER,, and its only monday,, and i need one!! i missed the NATS again,, lol and i live in columbus!!

NOTE: take little steps,, work on one small spot,, finish .. then move on,, it gives you experience and a sense of accomplishment!!

Day 372: It's been a hard pill to swallow. I haven't been as good with the updates as I had hoped to be. But, since the birth of Maddox, I've learned (again) how little time I actually have. And, the time I do have is usually spent on household chores or sleeping. When I announced the birth of my son, a good friend said that the completion of the car was going to be delayed by 15 months...and he couldn't be more accurate. However, I couldn't allow the car to sit in the garage collecting dust. So, with the support of my wife, the car was delivered today to a body shop for rust removal and sheet metal replacement. I hope to get the car back next March or April and will be ready for block work upon return. I'm sure she is just as excited to get her truck into the garage again....no more frost! I plan to visit the shop once a week or so...and pictures will begin again soon. I really didn't think the lack of time would be such an issue.

Good deal. Let the body shop guys work on the body, gives you more quality time with the kids. It will all even out in the end.

did they give you a ballpark price??? they should know prices,, like quarters install $$, drops$$, floor pan$$, etc,,

should have left it here!! after sandblasting,, id given you a flat rate, +/- 20%. there are some shops i blast for, and I wouldn't take my car there,, but, "dont bit the hand that feeds you" i just blast and keep on moving on... be careful!! and kids RULE!!! jc
