"I'm not meaning to feud. Look, like I said, don't take my word for it. Google it. Simply search "are cams ground with advance?". See how much info there is supporting it. For off the shelf cams, it's been a supported practice ever since the "energy crisis" of the early 70s when tetraethel lead was removed from gasoline. Most go 4*, some go 3* some go 5*. Like I said, the internet is your friend. Don't believe the internet? Call the cam company."
Rusty: I owe you a public apology. I didn't take your word for it, so I emailed several major cam companies (Lunati, Crane, Comp-Cams and Isky). On their street and street strip cams they DO grind in 2* to 5* advance. I've copied one of the replies below. My problem is that my reference knowledge is too old. When I was building engines and racing in the 60s, 70s and early 80s, this wasn't the case. As I see it, this is even more reason to degree in the cam. As one of the posters said, he regularly advances the cam when installing it. I imagine this is true of a lot of hot rodders. Anyway, I want to let you know that I should have checked CURRENT cam manufacturing practices before getting on you. You are right. I was wrong.
From Comp-Cams:
"Dave, that is a generic statement with some truth to it. A lot of our
street cams do have 4° of advancement built into it for a couple of
reasons. One we have found that most cams live up to the max performance
at that mark of advancement. So we have it ground into the cam. The
second part is that eliminates the need for the average hot rodder, to
have to go the process of degreeing in the cam. It will allow you to
install it straight up and then go..."
