1970 383 HP Engine Help / Cam Install

I'm not meaning to feud. Look, like I said, don't take my word for it. Google it. Simply search "are cams ground with advance?". See how much info there is supporting it. For off the shelf cams, it's been a supported practice ever since the "energy crisis" of the early 70s when tetraethel lead was removed from gasoline. Most go 4*, some go 3* some go 5*. Like I said, the internet is your friend. Don't believe the internet? Call the cam company.

These are good discussions. We can learn from each other experiences.

I like to advance a cam a couple of degrees just to get a little extra torque off of the line especally in a low compression engine. I took a 73 low compression 318 with a small cam and advance the cam 2 degrees and I was amazed how the little 318 just burned the tires off in a 71 duster I had.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I'll be starting it up as soon as the headers arrive from Jegs.

484 Mopar Purple shaft is a 'lil fella' compared to the .509 Hydraulic. Check out the Mopar Engine Manual/Direct Connection Manual (I have both), it states the .484 camshaft is the largest camshaft for a street automatic that will see strip use occasionally (for a 440). The .509 being the largest for a 4-speed street application. I run the .590 solid lifter camshaft which is light years more radical, and it is not that radical to me at all. 10:1 compression is recommended, with 3.91-4.10 gears. I don't see anything wrong with your combination, the purple shaft camshafts have PROVEN track performances and were built by Chrysler for Chrysler engines. I would have probably went with a smaller grind, like the .474 from Mopar but you already are ready to rock'n'roll. Should have a good lope at the local cruise nights'

Well some of these threads are like a good book.....you can't stop reading.........lol

The headers I ordered are just painted, not ceramic coated. It is a special on Jegs right now for $124.99. Nice deal.

Ordered their Ceramic Coated Headers for my Road Runner (built by Patriot Headers). Once the torsion bars were removed, Z-bar was out, engine was hoisted, car raised 2 feet in air, and the steering was undone.. They fit GREAT! :glasses10:

Yup, just start off with the $750 pair of TTI's and save yourself lots of time and head achs. Went through all that on my A-body. Here’s the b-body set, just lifted the engine about 3" and plugged them in. 1 Shim on the driver’s side.....

Rusty: I owe you a public apology. I didn't take your word for it, so I emailed several major cam companies (Lunati, Crane, Comp-Cams and Isky). On their street and street strip cams they DO grind in 2* to 5* advance. I've copied one of the replies below. My problem is that my reference knowledge is too old. When I was building engines and racing in the 60s, 70s and early 80s, this wasn't the case. As I see it, this is even more reason to degree in the cam. As one of the posters said, he regularly advances the cam when installing it. I imagine this is true of a lot of hot rodders. Anyway, I want to let you know that I should have checked CURRENT cam manufacturing practices before getting on you. You are right. I was wrong.

From Comp-Cams:
"Dave, that is a generic statement with some truth to it. A lot of our
street cams do have 4° of advancement built into it for a couple of
reasons. One we have found that most cams live up to the max performance
at that mark of advancement. So we have it ground into the cam. The
second part is that eliminates the need for the average hot rodder, to
have to go the process of degreeing in the cam. It will allow you to
install it straight up and then go..."

pfttttttttttttt. Naw man, it's all good. Lots of companies don't lay it out there because of proprietary reasons. I'm surprised you got such a straight forward answer. In the past, I've gotten stuff like "I'm not going there" or, I'm sorry, that's proprietary."

The way I see it is, if we're all discussing in an adult way and learnin from each other, we're in good shape. I never professed to know it all......I dont know nuthin in the grand scheme of things. I'm just a little peon. I appreciate the apology, but really it ain't necessary. I'm sure I'll be wrong about tons of stuff later on. LOL

The headers are Jegs (Patriot) 30081 going in my 67 Coronet. The main reason I chose them is because out of all of the threads I have read on "Budget" headers, nobody I have seen have run these on their 383 and posted an experience. So I figured at $124, why not try it and post my results. So I will keep everyone posted.

should be interesting. I know a lot of people have said they have had issues with Hookers, but I had Super Comps on my 67 Coronet with a 440 and power steering and they fit fine.

I believe, on paper, you can tell if the cam has advance ground in by subtracting the intake lobe centerline from the lobe separation angle.

Guys it looks like I will be running the Hooker HOK-5903HKR headers instead. I read that the Jegs line and the Flowtech 33103 headers will not work for me since I have power steering. So any experiences with these headers would be appreciated. Rusty I believe you went through this issue as well. Did you end up going with the Hooker headers?

Headers and Quick Fuel Slayer 750 cfm carb ordered today. I have been much happier since I made the switch to Jegs for my parts. Service, pricing, and delivery time all at its finest.

Depends on where you live. I receive my parts next day from Summit Racing if I order before noon. Jegs takes around four days.
