318 to hemi conversion

i found a 64 fury "survivor"last year for my dad and dragged it home.he had a 383 4 speed car he bought new after returning from vietnam and were gonna re create it.....with a little twist..the time has came for the transformation.it is a 318/auto car.426 hemi crate engine is on its way.i am REALLY pushing for the four speed.what is it gonna take to make it a four speed?and are the big block four speeds still around?i really need some good info as i have always fooled with mustangs.i know tremec has some transmission kits but we really wanna keep it old school.five and six speeds just dont sound right.thanks in advance.
 
First, welcome. (pop over to the welcome wagon) Yes, there are plenty of 4 speeds out there. IF you want a "Hemi" 4 speed (an 18 spline unit) be prepared to drop some hard coin, maybe $1200 or more (maybe less). Then you'll need a bellhousing (read scattershield) pedals, Z bar & pieces, frame bracket, hump and shifter.
 
will the 23 spline work.if so what is the differences in the two?what was the best rear that came in a 64?
 
A 23 will work. However, if you're planning to get frisky with this thing and put sticky tires on it, I've seen the 23 spline input shafts twist (behind a really healthy motor). Besides the input shafts, the gears in the two trannies were different, with the ones in the 18 being more heavy duty. As far as rears go, the only thing available in 64 (from the factory) was an 8.75. But if you're gonna go with stickies etc, then I'd go with a Dana.

I agree with 69 Runner on the Trans and Rear suggestion. Another option is the new Passion Performance Semi slick/shift Hemi box or a 5-speed conversion with O.D., if its gona be a street car. 8 3/4's work fine but the new Strange Dana 60 is bullet proof. It's a matter of how much coin you want to spend. The advantage of the 5 speed with O.D. is you can run streetable gears like 3:55s but still have the launch of 4:56. As far as rears go, a 65 to 70 B body rear will bolt in. Then you don't have to contend with the pressed on brake drum.
 
guy has a big block 4 speed with bellhousing pedals,whole nine yards.but its for a68-70 b body.what parts will or wont work?thanks
 
Bellhousing is fine, but I don't know if the pedal assembly would fit.

what does he want for all of that?
 
went to a mopar deal today and found a guy who had a bunch of 4 speeds laying out and got to talking to him and he actually had a 18 spline he hadnt unloaded.wound up buying it for a grand.real good lookin tranny.he has an 10 1/2" aluminum bellhousing for that trans and said hed take $300 for it.is this what i need and is it a decent deal?just wasnt sure about the 10 1/2" and 11" stuff.what do you guys think?
 
$300 is way to much for what amounts to the standard 70 up bellhousing. Pre 70 they used steel, and it was for the 11" (143 tooth) flywheel and clutch. 70 they went to the 130 tooth and 10.5" clutch. You can use either one.
