I feel stupid for asking this, but I am getting ready to start rebuilt 340 and want to make sure it fires right away.
I've ready many posts on this -- and I think I know the answer -- but want to double check.

I want to install distributor at 20 degrees advanced (to facilitate a quick start and I already know my ignition/motor loves it there).

Do I install distributor drive gear at TDC pointing to front left intake bolt, THEN hand turn engine CCW back to 20* (my balancer is marked and accurate), then drop in distributor.

Or does distributor drive gear go in after I set balancer at 20* advanced (which doesn't really make sense to me)?

Thanks.

Your third paragraph is correct. Drop in the distributor with the rotor pointing at number 1. I like to snug the hold down bracket to take out most of the movement and then, with the ignition on, number one plug wire connected to a spare, grounded plug, rotate the distributor back and forth quickly (while observing the #1 spark plug) to initiate a spark and lock down the distributor at the point of spark. You will have to rotate several times to get a "feel" for the spark timing but, it works quite accurately. Just set the damper timing marks at your desired initial timing specs.

Really it doesn't matter where the rotar faces as long as you put the #1 plug wire at that location. I usually drop the distributor in and test several positions to find where there's the least interference with the vacuum canister with the engine at 20 degrees (where mine likes it) then go from there. I've only ever lined it up visually and never had a problem with it not firing right off.

Another easy method to check your results
1. Use a priming tool run the oil pump.
2. Leave the plugs out and connect #1 to a grounded plug.
3. Crank it with a timing light.
Mine started immediately with a couple spoons of gas.
Remember all the other stuff, check for leaks, have a fire extinguisher handy etc...
