just built 440. 76 block with stock pistons, rods and crank. heads out of 69 model year. ran rough almost immediately. pulled plugs and #2, 8, 3 and 5 were all bent. any ideas where i went wrong? cant be coindence on the corresponding cylinders...

Long reach plugs in a big block? What's is your build? Flat top pistons....deck height....domed....????

I bet wrong plugs. In my 65 I have a 440 with a block made in late 75 and 1971 346 heads no plug issues

I am thinking that also..which is why I asked for pics to be sure

did you even check the gap on the plugs before putting them in? I have seen many new plugs come out of the box with gaps closed

Ill get pics of plugs tomorrow. used champion rj12yc, just 4 bent , other 4 ok. one of the electrodes is bent out not down??? flat top pistons, stock heads, fel pro gaskets.

these are smashed down to threads on plug and porcelan destroyed except the one the bent outward. all are pushed to side of center pin

Those should be good plugs for the engine! Not to long.

Are the rods and pistons origional to the crank or is this pieced together?

I am amazed how many guys put plugs in their car without gapping them. Then when you say something, they tell you they are gapped from the factory. OK then but not in my car.

gapped prior to installation

Aside fron the plug question, do you know any of the other answers here?

What's the engine in? Would it be easy to pull a head?

What was your piston to deck measurement? I can't imagine a issue unlees the heads or block was milled a lot. I'd be tempted to put TDC stop in and keep going in till you can't turn it over then compare that to you plugs for a depth comparision.

Cylinders 2, 8, 3, & 5 all share a common intake runner ....I bet you dropped something down the intake, or possibly a valve seat exploded and went back up the intake to other cylinders

you better pull both heads and find out what's in there

X2 on pulling the heads. Maybe not so much on something having been dropped. Take and post pictures of chambers and pistons, maybe something will "pop out". Mismatched pistons maybe?

Might want to look down the plug hold with a bore scope to see what the pistons look like. Were the four plugs on the same side of the engine?

Hwe stated 2 8 3 and 5. Id regap and turn motor by hand and check for interference.

it's too late now to even think of doing anything except for pulling the heads off to see damage....something went through that intake to all 4 cylinders....I bet whatever it is, it's still there
