Hi All,

I am ready to install my MSD goodies into my 66 Coronet 440/727 combo.

I have the following: MSD 6AL Box, MSD Blaster 2 Coil, and MSD 8645 440/426 Distributor. Also, I have some additional red and black 10-awg wires and also some 16 awg red and black wire.

I plan on using the following diagram that MSD provided:

The following looks pretty straightforward: Connections from the MSD Box to the battery, distributor, and coil.

Here are my dumb questions:

1. Where is the 12V Switched Source connection actually made? Under the dashboard somewhere or in the engine compartment?

2. The diagram says the Ballast Resistor is not necessary. So, do I just solder the two wires from the Ballast Resistor together?

Other than that I think all else looks pretty easy. Of course I got to do the timing and stuff. But, this is a stock 440; nothing fancy.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,

watermelon

you can get +12 switched power from the coil + terminal, and just bypass the resistor all together...just follow the MSD schematics, and delete everything else.

Ok. I think it just hit me as I looked at the diagram again.

So, I disconnect the original coil positive wire and hook that wire up to the small red wire from the MSD box.

where will the box be mounted ?

i think it will probably end up in the engine bay somewhere. i'm really thinking of relocating the battery to the trunk to free up the battery tray for the msd box.

Regarding bypassing the Ballast Resistor: Do I just remove the two leads on the ballast resistor and connect them together?

ok, now i think i'm just going to mount the MSD Box in the engine bay area.

take a look; i think i'm going to place it under the windshield wiper fluid reservoir:

also, since i the new MSD Distro does not use a vaccum advance, do I just place a vaccum plug on the carb port that the old distro vaccum advance was plugged into?

take a look below; my current vac advance distro is connected to the carb at the port that is all the way to the right. do i plug that port?

Yes, if your new distributor isn't vacuum advance, you can just plug that hole.

thanks. i've been tryin to upload a pic of my proposed MSD box location. your reply came in quick. my new MSD distributor is not vaccum advanced.

from what I've seen, most MSD's are mounted in the engine bay area. my car is only a cruiser.

do you think the spot that i designated in the picture above is ok?

thank again,

That looks like a pretty good location. Personally, I'm not a fan of engine compartment mounting due to heat issues. I have the same box mounted inside the car under the dash and unless you lay on the floor, you can't see it. Just personal preference, as I've not really heard of anyone having an actual problem with heat, I would just rather not tempt fate with my luck, lol, and I know heat is a BIG enemy of electronics.

Well, I haven't drilled any holes yet.

I picked up some heat shrink and convoluted tubing for some of the wiring.

Is any one else using convoluted tubing?

Original Coil: Some part is on there - Do I need it for the MSD Blaster 2?

See the pic below

Some part is attached to the original coil negative side and air conditioning unit frame - Do I need it for the MSD Blaster 2?

thanks for the input,

ps: i'm guess i'm on my way. i got the msd box mounted in the engine bay

That's a condensor utilized to help eliminate electrical interference to your radio. Hook it to your negative on the new coil. Make sure it is grounded/secured well.

Where did you buy this MSD ignition kit, if you don't mind me asking?

^^^What he said, unless you're not running a radio, then you can eliminate it.

thanks for the info.

i just pieced everything together from summitracing.com and used MSD's website for reference.

thanks as well. i'm gonna leave it in. i really only listen to the flowmasters though.

thanks again,

i have the ignition box, coil, and distributor installed.

the spark plug wires on the passenger side at the spark plug end will not bend enough to get on the spark plug. it is like i need an angled boot for the spark plug ends too.

i purchased an MSD Spark Wire Plug Wire Set from Summit based on a 67 Coronet with a 440.

i can return the ones i purchased to Summit.

Can anyone recommend a set that will work with an MSD distributor?

thanks,
