Hi I just built a 76 440 raised the compression to 10-1 and it runs great with lots of power, but once in a while when starting there is a tinny / scraping sound coming from the front of the motor while cranking. After it starts there is no noise any thoughts? Sounds like something hitting the timing cover.

......Sounds like something hitting the timing cover.

The six bolts that hold the crank pulley on can hit the timing cover if you replaced them at some point in time with common hardware. The factory bolts are an odd ball length for that application.

And the second possibility that comes to mind is as "WileERobby" pointed out, oil slinger has to be properly oriented or you are going to have even bigger problems very soon.

Yes, oil slinger is offset a little. The offset goes AWAY from the timing chain. My 400 engine sometimes makes a sound like the belt is squeaking. Even with the belt off, you can still hear it. Some one told me the oil slinger is rubbing on the timing cover. Maybe the cover got pushed in a little, or the slinger has more offset than normal. He had the same prob. Haven't taken it apart to fix it, but that sounds right. Too long of a bolt holding the bottom pulley on can cause the noise as some one has said. Pull the balancer and see if there are scratch marks on the timing cover.
