440 vs 413

440. They're both old and chances of either running like new is low. Go to Summit and you can order 440 pistons to your door in a day most likely and it will feel 27 better believe it or not. Besides a 66 block in a 66, it's magic.

Which pistons would you suggest?

Hmmm..... both engines have small exhaust valve heads. Even on a stock'ish rebuild, I'd look for a newer engine. Otherwise, get the 66 440 (piston availability) if you care about having a 66 motor in your 66 Charger
I like the later "452" heads. They are more or less a " 906" with hardened valve seats. They benefit from 1.74" exhaust valves and better porting. As another bonus, these open chambered heads will knock a full point of compression off an engine equipped with closed chambered heads. All these features help the engine deal with today's unleaded fuels. I use them on my engines. Indy Cylinder Heads used to sell rebuilt " 452" heads for $600/pr. I don't know if they still do.

440. Nobody has found a substitute yet for cubic inches. In percentage terms, the 440 is a 6.5% increase in cubes, which you will feel [ tq ].

first you need to know what heads open or close. i would want a 4032 alloy over the 2618 for the street and a thin 1/16-1/16- 3/16 rings.
Sorry to hijack….why would you prefer the 4032 alloy? Would you also prefer it in a nitrous motor?

The "no substitute" maxim should have a corollary: anything you can do to a small engine to overcome inches..... can be done to the big motor too!

4032 has more silicone, can be run with tighter piston to wall, so quieter. 2618 has no silicone, is stronger, needs more piston to wall and is the preferred alloy for high horsepower, high stress, Boosted applications. Given a choice, use 2618 in a nitrous motor.

33 IMP Yes exactly took the words right out of my mouth

Well gentlemen… I just bought:
440 w/ all accessories and transmission. He said reverse might be goofed.
413 w/ all accessories and transmission. Tracking it is cable vs linkage. If I have a big block 727 from a 1967 Newport, is there any way to use its linkage setup?

Anyway- $1400 for the package deal. I think I did okay. I’ll try and post the two short vids of them starting and running for a second. Maybe you guys with the trained Mopar ear can assess if they’re healthy with 15 second clips.

The 2032 expands less so can be fitted with less bore clearance than a 2618 piston. At operating temp, the clearance is the same. 2618 will have slightly more piston slap on a cold morning.

These videos are from the guy that I’m buying from. I’ll post more once I get them home and start assessing. I’ll ensure the oil is good enough to troubleshoot. Then I’ll bottle feed and see what happens.

Hoping to get a little help as I’m no mechanic by a loooong stretch. A couple questions I’ve already thought of:
Between the correct linkage from the 66 Imperial’s 727 (but no reverse) and the 65 imperial’s functioning 727 (but with cable shift). Can I not use the shifting rods off of the 66 to put onto the 65?
Also- I have the driveshaft for the 66 Charger that the 440 is going into. Is there any difference in that driveshaft since it was a 318 small block car? Guessing the length is fine but the yoke may be different? Thx and I’ll post pics when I return tomorrow evening.

Hope you’re planning on some reconditioning

The 65 bigblock cable shift tranny is good to sell to someone that needs it.
Keep the kickdown rod setup.
If your car has a smallblock 727 trans, then the driveshaft will work.
