67 Coronet build thread

Hell if you can put quarters or patches on you can weld perches. I found it much easier than I thought it would be. Getting the angles right is key though. Once I cut them off and cleaned up the housing, I set the it on the leaf springs and played with the position of the pinion until I was happy and tacked it up.

Ya i think I could do the perches, I was refering to welding housing ends...now I know why its called a "project" instead of a "do it"....

I have a jig made up for doing axle housings, you'd be amazed how much you can pull a tube just from welding perches on! I usually have to go back and shrink the opposite side to pull them back square.

Clue me in please!

Anytime you weld there's shrinkage, when welding perches on where it's only on less than half the diameter of the tube the tube will pull up on the same side as welded. My jig is 2 plastic bushings that I machined on the lathe that fit into the carrier bearing clamps allowing a 1 15/16" shaft to be held true to the center section centerline then there's 2 more bushings that locate the tube ends. After welding the bushings are far from sliding into the axle bearing ends, I'll heat the opposite side with the torches (a 1/2" path opposing the weld red hot) and allow it to cool usually only takes a few tries to pull it back. When heating you want narrow lines mimicking the welds and if multiple tries are needed don't do the same spot everytime. Now the big question is how much out of true will they tolerate without problems? People weld on them all the time without checking them but I don't believe in hope and pray.

guys here at the shop often back brace to counter the effects on whatever they are welding. It's amazing how much large tubing moves out of shape from welding.

gotcha, sorry I misunderstood. Welding the ends takes skill to prep and weld properly. I understand how it's done but I don't have the skills yet. guys like 747 & 57hemi make it look easy.

I like to weld the perches on with the jig installed. Also the truck housings (Dana 60) are very thick tubes, gotta crank up the welder for those.

Well I hit a milestone today. .actually got to spread some filler. It took me a couple of tries to figure out how much I ccould use/needed before it started setting. Worked on the engine bay where the blower , bulkhead were as well as the aprons. Not a body man but Im pretty happy with the results, what a pita!
Compared to the engine compartment i think the panels will be a lot easier

You may have noticed that I am fooling around with engine stuff, and suspension instead of bodywork....lol. Procrastinating. I really hate bodywork. But, I do need to get busy with it soon. Yours looks fine..

Ya I hear you, Ive never gone this far on a car before, Ive fixed some dents and have shot a few panels but this is a whole different game...my fingers are killing me now!!!
Ive always wanted to try it so here I am. I always liked doing things myself if possible....I think I can make it look ok.
My biggest worry is the paint, Im leaning to a lite metallic which Ive never shot before and from what Ive heard/read there are lots of ways to really screw it up....

Yeah, your right, study up and do practice panels first to get the feel for it. Light flake is easier than heavy to get coated evenly.

No kidding Mike....Do you have any fingers left?

This will be a beauty when finished!

Nothing on your level Justin!!!!
Those corners and radi chewed the tips up pretty good...will be glad to get on some quarters where all I have to use is a block!!!

Well we got back from our cruise yesterday I took the rest of the week off to make up for some lost time on the car.
Before we left I managed to do some work on the left quarter which turned out pretty nice. My father inlaw sprayed some more primer on it while I was gone.
Today worked on the lower section and am really happy with the results considering ive never done this before.

Well I don't know if "great" is a word I would use exactly, but it's much appreciated!!!!
I'm happy with the way the middle section turned out with primer on it, looks and feels good. Haven't cut it but once with 80...After I get the other side decent going to use high build to clean it up.
