I'm a youngster that works on my car with my dad. Whenever I drive my car to school it will run just fine. I let it warm up for a good bit and it takes off and i'm good to go. After around 10 minutes of cruising it starts to kill itself and it's hard to get it home. I am just confused with the fact that it runs so good at first then it just takes a **** on me. Any thoughts?

I'm assuming it is carbureted? If so the choke is likely sticking.

Is it a big block? If so, might want to check the fuel pump push rod for wear. The wear a little bit, then wont pump enough fuel.
Something to check.

Won't idle or no power at speed?

The symptoms you describe sound like they could be those of a failing coil. Works fine when cold but after running awhile and heating up it starts failing due to internal deterioration. Once the engine cools off it again works fine until it heats up again. Try changing out the coil and see if that helps.

choke check first...bad valves will cause poor running when warmed up...cold...fine

Bad coil, like AR67GTX says.

When the coil begins to heat up, wire inside the coil expands, separates, breaking the circuit. After the car cools back down, works okay (for a little), right?

Yes that is correct. We did use a coil sitting around the garage. I'll talk to my father!

are you running an electric fuel pump?

Choke is easiest thing to check, but I'd bet on the coil. I had a similar problem on my 66.
and the bad coil was not very old. My 2 cents.

I hope. My dad said that is a good possibility. We're buying a new coil this weekend. Hopefully it should work!

Was the choke coming all the way off?

Does the heat stove open on the exhaust manifold?

We have an electric choke that hasn't been set up yet I don't think. And i'm unsure of what you mean with the exhaust manifold. We're running headers.

Hmm, if it runs good cold with no choke...

It could be way rich.

If the choke is not set up, is it fully open?

Could any of these deal with me running to big of a cam in a low comp motor? I'm running the 509 in a 77 block. Factory bore and pistons.
