68 RM23 Roadrunner, The rebuild of an old friend

Wow - looks like it will be stunning, especially in direct sunlight!

One of these days I need to get the balls to paint one myself...
Thanks Hsorman. I'm a little reluctant to see this in direct sunlight. Booth lights can lie but I think I mottled the pearl a bit on the sides.
As my younger son says, "nobody is going to be focusing on the paint once it's fully assembled". True statement. But still.....
One of my favorite things to do at car shows is study paint.

Thanks Blue.
The Murano is in the DBC 500 color blender. I sprayed the DBC over the pinstripe but the Bird is only under the DC4000, 4 coats.
I didn't want the effect of the Murano over the top of the Bird. Did I make a mistake?
That is a good question. If it did not fade or wrinkle then think you are ok. In painting my car put royal blue mini flake over my single stage b5 blue with color blender. first coat with flake in it then second coat with no flake in it. Then put three coats of clear over the car. Used Matrix product's on the car. Use color blender over art work or like putting ghost flames on the car to seal it from your clear coat. Even pin striping. This is to stop bleeding effect.

Thanks for pointing that out Blue. When I did the graphic under the hood (below), my PPG rep told me to dust it with DC4000 first and watch how it reacted.
If it seemed stable after it flashed, lay it on.
Did the same thing on the door badges, no issues. Time will tell if he was wrong.

Signing off today, tired of looking at this car and shooting paint.
Unmasked and curing out. Will start addressing the F@ck ups tomorrow.

Spent the last two days blocking out runs, sags, anomalies, etc. I'll pull it out, put it aside and let it cure and shrink for a while before I start the cut and buff. Tired of looking at it.
Overall I'm pretty pleased at this point but kick myself on a few things that were totally my fault. Nothing that can't be fixed/lived with. Again, paint and body work is pure VooDoo.

BTW Blue, no issues with the clear over the decals. I remember now that my PPG rep told me to just fog the decals on the first coat and watch how they react. If nothing blurs or smears after 30 minutes, lay it on. I did that on the under hood graphic and door badges. All is well.

Farting around this evening in the shop tidying up after the flurry of activity last week. My son left the Duster home today. The Bird gassing off.
Admired the two old Plymouths chilling out before I killed the lights.

Hey guys, a quick update.
The donor block is currently at the machinist getting fitted for the stroker kit.
I let the paint cure for about 2.5 months before cutting it mainly to let it shrink out.
Finished the final polish today. 23 laps in total around this thing touching every square inch. I'm sick of body and paint work for while. Ready to get on to the mechanical / trim / wiring stage of the game.

Just Awesome!!! That'll be a Real Head Turner... Something to be proud of for sure... Love the bird under the hood... And the pinstripes... And the door birds....

Looking great. IMO the worst is over for you and the more enjoyable part of bolting things together is on the horizon.

Out standing. Know the feeling of body and painting work. But now the fun start's. Putting it all back together goes faster than you think. Really grate work keep us up on the rest of the build. :D

I just noticed in the pics how fucked up the floor got from the cut and buff.
I used Blackjack dry guide coat between all stages up to 3000. Worked great but what a mess.

Clear down. I'm pooped.
Not one run up to this point then the DC 4000 and I didn't play well together. Couldn't get it to flow then ran the **** out of it in a few of spots. Nothing that a wet block and more labor won't fix.
Next time you hear somebody bitch about the cost of custom paint kick them square in this @ss. This stuff is pure Voo-Doo.

I hear that! Years ago I painted one of my cars, closest to perfect that I've ever done... no runs and no need to even touch it when it was done but since then I hate painting! Every single time I paint it's something else and usually what you described.. won't flow then runs. This last one (my dad's truck) I finally felt great about the results, went on silky smooth not needing buffed, came back a few days later and the clear had shrunk or something but now has enough texture that it needs blocked and buffed:BangHead:

The RR is looking awesome, love the color.. don't see them in white often. Regardless if you have to go back and fix a few things it always feels great knowing it's painted.. no more priming, no more mess haha.

Runner, seeing this pearl hit me. I have been thinking about a pearl that would make my B5 color pop some more. Got some murano ordered today. Thanks for sharing.

Cool. Which color? Blue I assume? I can't imagine the gold, red or violet would do much for B5.
Just my 2 cents but B5 is pretty damned awesome by it self. I'm sure you know this but be sure to shoot several test panels first to help figure out the proper ratio and coats. We shot 8 test panels and had a hard time making a decision and that was over W1 White. Murano over B5 makes my brain hurt. Keep me posted. Can't wait to see it.

Yes sir, the blue pearl. My paint jobber had to order it from the PPG store in Tennessee. I’m in Louisiana. Guess it’s like everything else these days. In short supply and three days away. If you don’t mind when I get my let down panel sprayed I’ll post a pic of it.

Sure, no problem. They had to order mine from California and said it was in short supply. I had already shot the jambs with a bottle my PPG rep "gave" me because he wanted to see it. I didn't have enough left over to complete the exterior so I ordered more and they told me it was hard to find. I panicked a bit because if they couldn't find it I would be in a "jamb" pun intended. It took about 10 days to get it.
