70 Coronet - Rebuild

Awesome build. I like the B5 Blue

Thanks 6PKRTSE. This actually isn't B5, but it looks close. This is the new PQD Mopar color. I believe it's on the new Challengers??

Your Challenger looks sweet as well.......

I haven't been working on the car as often as I should be lately, but making a little progress along the way.

I got passenger fender back off the car and cut out rot for repair.

Once I cut out bad section, I epoxy primed interior area before welding in new patch.

Then sanded everything down and epoxy primed whole thing.

I also got the driver door sanded down and primed, but forgot to take pictures along the way. Fender and door are rehung on car with decent gaps. Now I need to pull off passenger door and get that epoxy primed. Getting closer to starting finish body work to prep for final paint.

Well it's been a while since I've made an update so I figured I'd show some progress.

I haven't got the passenger door back on yet, but the trim holes have been welded shut and it just needs scuffed and coated in epoxy primer.

The main thing I've been doing is helping my brother get his grilles restored for his Bee. He's basically done with it other than a few tiny details. Since I need a good pair of grilles for my Bee tribute, we repaired multiple sets.

We started off by repairing any broken or missing ribs by adding plastic powder and glue to the areas. Then filed, sanded and glass beaded to remove any old paint or debris. My biggest contribution was taking the best set into work and 3D scanning them so we could make templates for masking the ribs for paint. It took some time, but it worked. I was planning on just using some heavy gauge paper for the templates, but he also had a set cut from flat steel as we thought they would hold up better and less chance of the paper moving while painting. We had to bend the steel a bit to get it to conform to the grille, but they worked out pretty well.

Before using the templates, we sprayed the grille with Bulldog adhesion promoter, then shot the rib areas in stain black using the SEM color coat paint.

After a couple coats of satin black, we dropped in the metal masks and shot the silver.

Once we pulled off the templates we were pretty happy with the results. There might be a couple small spots that need a touch up with small paint brush where there was more silver on the black than we wanted, but overall it beats the hell out of using tape to cover everything.

Officially started finish body work this weekend. Goal is to have finish work done and car painted before spring. Started on driver side where we welded on new quarter panel. Many, many more hours to go.

Those grill templates are pretty cool.

Those masking templates are pretty slick. I’d be grateful to buy a set if you wanted to sell me a set.

Thanks Sahara. Once I'm finished with them, I might just take you up on your offer. What do you think they are worth?

I dunno, a hundred bucks?

Sorry for delayed response Sahara. I think that’s a fair price. Once I get finished with them, I’ll send you a PM to arrange payment and shipment.

Didn’t get as much time off during the holidays as I had hoped, but my brother and I have been getting some of the finish work done as we have time. We got most of the filler work done and getting closer to high build primer stage.

Before starting finish work on hood, I needed to get holes drilled for scoops and bee emblem.

Thanks to a picture posted back in 2010 by Crunchy_frog, I was able to print off a guide to where the hole positions were. I also drilled holes for superbee emblem on nose of hood based on template my brother gave me from his hood.

Realized I needed to replace the foam between the hood skin and reinforcement metal underneath due to it being dissolved away during chemical dip. Did some searching on here and decided to use SEM flexible urethane foam. Stuff works pretty well. Once set up, I can tell the tin sound went away when tapping on hood.

Got hood scuffed and epoxy primed this weekend. Did the same to underside of trunk lid.

Thank you! Just let me know when you’re ready and how to pay and I’ll take care of it immediately.

Sahara, so I’ve finally finished all our grilles. What I’ve found is no two grilles are exactly the same. Meaning, the metal template for the larger section wouldn’t fit the other grilles we repainted. I don’t feel comfortable selling you the metal templates in fear they wouldn’t fit your grilles.

What I had to do was print template outlines onto thicker paper and cut them out with razor blade. The paper is flexible enough to meet the contour of the different grilles but stiff enough to keep from moving up and down as you spray the paint. If you want to try this I’m willing to work with you on the template design. I had to play with the sizing when printing them off to get them to match actual part size, so I’m not sure emailing you the file would help you much either. I could print off some sheets to send to you via regular mail.

Let me know if you’re still interested.

Been a long while since I’ve posted any progress. Where does the time go?

Anyway, we got the filler work completed as best we could. Saw some other posts where guys recommend sealing the filler with another coat of epoxy primer so we did that as well.

A few days later we shot some heavy coats of high build primer.

Time to start blocking our asses off. LOL. One way or another, this car is getting painted this year. I’m dying to start putting it back together.
