Well it's been a while since I've made an update so I figured I'd show some progress.
I haven't got the passenger door back on yet, but the trim holes have been welded shut and it just needs scuffed and coated in epoxy primer.
The main thing I've been doing is helping my brother get his grilles restored for his Bee. He's basically done with it other than a few tiny details. Since I need a good pair of grilles for my Bee tribute, we repaired multiple sets.
We started off by repairing any broken or missing ribs by adding plastic powder and glue to the areas. Then filed, sanded and glass beaded to remove any old paint or debris. My biggest contribution was taking the best set into work and 3D scanning them so we could make templates for masking the ribs for paint. It took some time, but it worked. I was planning on just using some heavy gauge paper for the templates, but he also had a set cut from flat steel as we thought they would hold up better and less chance of the paper moving while painting. We had to bend the steel a bit to get it to conform to the grille, but they worked out pretty well.
Before using the templates, we sprayed the grille with Bulldog adhesion promoter, then shot the rib areas in stain black using the SEM color coat paint.
After a couple coats of satin black, we dropped in the metal masks and shot the silver.
Once we pulled off the templates we were pretty happy with the results. There might be a couple small spots that need a touch up with small paint brush where there was more silver on the black than we wanted, but overall it beats the hell out of using tape to cover everything.
