72 Charger Fuel tank Removal

Hey all I am planning on pulling the gas tank from my 72 charger this weekend to clean and inspect as I think it is the culprit behind my issues and being fairly new to these cars Im wondering if there's anything I should know or need to look out for? or just any advice in general? Any help would be most appreciated!

You can pull the pickup out the front without dropping the tank by spinning the lock ring. If it still has the sock on the pickup it's likely plugged. I would suggest upgrading the pickup to 3/8". If the tank is rusty the pickup likely is too. Tanks are affordable for a 72. We bought one not long ago. I wouldn't waste my time with a rusty one.

I pulled mine years ago..very simple. It wasn't as empty as it sounded when i knocked on it tho.

If you can get the tank drained it is pretty easy. Make sure you disconnect all the lines and lower it down with a jack. I just replaced my 74 Charger fuel tank with a 71/72 efi tank and works great so far with the in tank pump.

I think my 73 tank was $150 about 5 years ago.

DO NOT throw away your OEM lock ring, the ones supplied with new tanks are thinner and JUNK.

IIRC sock filter replacements are available.

...the gaskets for the sender are generally junk as well.

Mine didn't last 2 years.

I replaced it with a red toilet flush valve gasket almost 4 years ago and it is holding up.

okay I will be sure to keep those. Should I also replace the fuel sending unit while I have it off?

If your sending unit is currently in good shape and working, yes keep it. Aftermarket ones are hit and miss. Maybe replace the sock and float.

Good morning i would like to know the part numbers for your tank set up. I want to do that too my 71 charger. I am using a 5.9 magnum out of van with factory e.f.i thank you
