ATF but can I use ford mercon or dextron.

Dextron is what is spec'd for it.

This, because you have a shift kit in the 904, right?

Anyway, drain the converter too.

DEXRON will be nice, and it has no T

trick shift is just expensive/colored type F, un-necessary for any application. Trans brake racers need synthetic fluid to keep from roasting it.

Dextron for street cruiser with gentle shifts. Mercon for harsher shifts. Composition of friction materials in Torqueflight and Fordomatic were different, requiring different properties in the fluid used. As another poster has stated, any "quick shift" fluids are basically similar to Mercon.

Guys . It Dexron/mercon II and III. That's your do everything ATF.
Type F is what you mean. That's the ford only stuff. It has no friction modifiers. It hits hard, but can rip your clutches and bands off.
Play at your own risk.
The OP needs plain old ATF.

I am using ATF+4 in my stock 65 727 and it works great. If you look at the specs for the ATF+4 you will find it blows all the other fluids away.

Thanks for all the replies , a friend of mine had 2 cases of mercon and dextron and wanted to give it away for free. Thats why I was asking.

Torqueflites don't really care what you put in them , including a mix of types.
