So I have decent running Dodge Ram work truck left over from when I recently retired. It's a beater, but it gets the job done, and a replacement is soon in the cards.
On Dec 18th I was transferring equipment from my 26' straight truck to a buyer's PU truck. My truck was parked 20' away, as I was inventorying equip on the Ram's center console of the items being transferred, the Rams Door was left wide open, as I was parked on the side of a dirt path in a private storage yard. Sitting very close to me was a tandem axle trailer parked, not connected to any vehicle in the middle of the path. Nobody was in the area. After about 1 hr 45mins, as the three of us were wrapping things up, the trailer without warning moved away and its rear fender as it swung slightly it appears caught the Ram's driver door and extremely loudly nearly ripped it off.

All three of us were yelling, but the towing vehicle just drove away. And since, the PU truck being loaded had an unsecured load, the only vehicle to give proper chase was my newly wrecked Ram. I bent the door partially back and me and one of the witnesses then jumped in the back bed and we caught and blocked the driver to a stop down the road. His first "line" was I "parked too close". He did not want to call the police, I get that. I said as long as you will fix the damage I don't care. I thought it might be a $500 door replacement cost. I took picture of him, his DL, his tag, his fender damage on his trailer, and my door damage, all with a witness. Next day one body shop would not quote, as they only do insurance on new vehicle repairs. Another local body shop found a used door 1200? miles away and quoted the repair at $1700. Next body shop is 30 miles away.

I called the driver, gave him my quotes he said it should cost $500. He lives in Illinois; he rents a space at the storage yard but has been according to landlord locked out for non-payment. He never returned my call after that. I contacted My local Sheriff's office, they would not make a report because I also left the scene of the accident, therefore they said they could not investigate, even though that is how I identified and caught the hit and run driver. They said I could file an unofficial report with the state DMV, and I did with pictures and witness names.
I reluctantly contacted my insurance company as he might try to make a claim against me. They contacted him, but he would not share his insurance info and hung up on my agent. Truck only has liability coverage.

Tonight, I was leaving the local Walmart, traffic near the store entrance was rather congested. As I waited for parking lot traffic to clear, I noticed a similar truck drive by behind me, but I paid it no notice, He parked away from the store near the end of the row. I decided to take the same direction exiting as there was less traffic that direction. A person was walking the other direction and passed me as I was exiting, again I paid him attention, but when I passed his truck, the light bulb finally went off. I checked my mirror and the driver now 150' behind me, had stopped walking and turned around to I suppose see if I was going to stop by his truck, as I guess he recognized me and my damaged truck first.

So I kept going and left Walmart without stopping, got on the highway. I made u turn down the road and drove back and kept my distance. I called 911, explained my situation, a supervisor showed up in 7 minutes. showed him my pics of the Hit and run driver, his tag, his DL, the damage, etc. Pointed out the truck. He said do not approach. 10 Minutes another patrol car arrived. The Supervisor returned and said it's a civil matter, here is his Insurance Info (Unconfirmed of course) and the driver had an outstanding warrant for another matter and was arrested and on the way to jail.:bananadance:

I would imagine the next time something like that happens, you won't let the squirrel leave till the heat shows up.

Well, legally, I have no way to stop him from leaving.
And according to the Deputies, I also technically left the scene of the accident.

Figures. Next time, toss em to the Gators.
Not long after we moved here, a punk trust fund kid hit our neighbors PARKED truck and tried to split. He had been playing on his phone plus was on something. I made him stay and told him if he tried to split, I'd call the Sherriff. I did call the truck owner though. Old biker guy who still has that don't f with me persona. He came home and proceeded to brow beat that little punk into a quivering mess. Insurance company screwed him unfortunately.

Reminds me years and years ago I was sitting in my 85 Mustang waiting for my mom who was in a store and a car flies by and smacked me and keeps going. This was in my 20s when I was a very IDGAF person and I took off after the car, it had a lead but I saw the model and found it a mile or so away pulled over inspecting the damage. It was a young lady and the only damage was her plastic mirror shattered on my car and didn’t hurt it. She denied hitting anything so I asked why the #%$% is she holding a half dangling mirror? She didn’t have an answer and I inspected my car and it was fine and told her she got lucky.
Then remembered my mom! She was standing in front of the store looking very confused

I helped a trucker out of a bind by not phoning the police when I was 17 after he hit my front fender. He was almost in tears with this sad story, so I said OK. He gave me the wrong number and I paid for my car. What did I learn, NEVER again. I don't care if a fly hits my car, I phone the police. If they say, that isn't necessary, I tell them, we'll let the police decide that. NEVER AGAIN. That guy ruined me for life. It wasn't the money as much as it was about human decency and trust.

Moral of the story: any significant incident, you immediately contact local LE, do not leave the scene of the accident.

Except in this case, my truck was parked, not running, not occupied and calling the police would have served no chargeable purpose by the time they would likely arrive, the perp had departed as he would have escaped. I have been in another hit and run at 2 am with major damage and chased and also caught the car, but the drunk driver escaped to his apt, front end all damaged, but locked and parked in his assigned parking space, steam still rising from the damage, but his wife told the cops after they knocked on his door he was home all night, but apparently drunk? Cops said they could do nothing since I could not put him behind the wheel. Rear end impact in a different PU was so great my head knocked out the back window of the PU, knocking me silly, and it blew the mounted radio out of the dash on to the seat among other things.
Legally witnessing and identifying the driver behind the wheel beyond reasonable doubt is crucial in H&R. Dash camera cannot always do that.
However, I do believe dsah cameras are useful with my personal experience.

Yeah there is no catch all perfect solution, just have to try and stack things in your favor. My cams will trigger even if my car is parked but its only front facing.

Meaning when loading a parked PU, the dash cam would turn on?
And again, the most a dash cam would record here would be the back of a boxed trailer's tag moving away, which was registered to another local unknown individual that has no legal/financial liability as that is all the towing vehicles responsibility.

Yes it would turn on if loading it jostles it enough. My cam will trigger if the car is parked and say I open the trunk and then slam it shut. It was kind of fun reviewing all the footage from when I had a car in for dealer service or body work. Every little thing made it record.
