I'm about to do the first oil change in my new motor, its a 383 I have maybe a 100 miles or so on it. I don't know for sure cause me speedometer/odometer isn't working. I've heard things that it's not good to put synthetic in a fresh motor then I've heard others say its crap. If no one has heard of Amsoil's Z-ROD formulation it's got the high zinc in it.

I would stick with a high zinc conventional oil like Valvoline VR-1 Racing or Brad Penn type oil until the engine has a few thousand miles on it. I don't think that you will hurt anything by using Aimsoil Z-Rod, I just think that the rings will seat faster with conventional oil. I'm sure that others will have differing opinions but that's the way I've always broken in a motor and it's always worked for me.
One of the things I've never liked about synthetic oil is it's ability to turn a small leak into a gusher, but that's another story.

I already bought the Amsoil stuff so I'll hold onto that and use the VR1 for this first change. I found some at NAPA so I'll be picking that up after work.

Myself I like the amsoil Z rod. It is what I use in all of my old cars with flat tappet cams. I used the amsoil break in oil and then went right to the Z rod. I have always heard you just can't do the initial break in on a synthetic oil that is the reason they make a break in oil. I also believe most engine builders will tell you that within the 100 miles your rings should be seated and the engine should be broken in. Best of luck!
Matt

I use break in oil and then full on synthetic with heavy z concentrate... I use Joe Gibbs Driven Hot Rod oil though.. good stuff.. But I have never heard from my builder not to use synthetic during break in

Next change get the Brad Penn stuff 10/40 has good stuff in it. and also get wix or napa gold filter don't use fram.

I use WIX filters on everything and I actually have Brad Penn in it now with comp cams break in additive. The Brad Penn is just too much of a pain to get around here

Jegs! same price as everywhere else and just pay handing Jegs Jegs JEGS LOL wish they had jugs

It'll be safe to use your Amsoil's Z-ROD. Nevermind the myths about synthetics, it's just better oil. Factories who have to pay for engine failures under warranty put synthetic oil in as the factory fill in many performance cars; Viper, Corvette, Porsches, Cobra Mustangs all use synthetic oil when new.

Exactly!! If an oil was so good that it prevented the rings from seating (meaning it lubricated so well to stop the wear) a lot of people other than myself would want to know about it.

Good point guys, I haven't bought the other oil so I'll just switch to Amsoil now.

Put it in, the only reason to not use syn at break in is expense, why waste 15 a qt when you can waste 5 a qt, break in you drop right away to flush out all the little things missed and if you have a flat cam flush out the lube.

It always seems to take 10 years for people to see the light
