Another white egret bites the dust.....at least it's not on my carport this time.

A few months ago I found a mess of feathers on my carport behind my shop and a day or so later after smelling something dead I looked for more remains and found the legs under a steel welding table that's also under the carport. That confirmed what it was and today this one is out in the easement about 75 feet from the shop. I'm guessing a hawk got it because we're swamped with them right now and have been for several months now. They've always been around but not this many and haven't seen any coyote since the new neighborhood went in behind me a few years ago.

Think that's what's here too but not sure if they come this far to the south. There was a hawk looking it over when I opened my bedroom shade to let the sun shine in. By the time I came out to look at what it was (thought it was a trash bag), the hawk was gone.

A couple of years ago, we had a couple of Horned Owls that had two chicks. They killed one of those Egrets, but didn’t leave a mess like that. The babies had most of the bird for dinner.

We have had hawks here kill and eat Blue Jays, Mourning Doves, etc. When they are done eating, there is nothing but feathers left. They devour all the bones, feet, etc.

We live on a small lake with egrets, hawks, ducks, geese, cormorants (hate them), green herons, owls, seagulls, and even golden and bald eagles now and then. Haven’t ever seen a hawk take on an egret before, I think they are too big for our hawks to mess with. But my wife did see a golden eagle or osprey snatch a seagull off the water one time and haul it off.

It’s been a few years but I’ve found the remains of ducks in the yard a few times and suspect a large owl or hawk got them. By remains I mean 2 wings was it.

Owl, or hawk, would be my guess. Both could have easily killed it, but nether could have eaten it all. Most others would have eaten or taken it all. Took two days for a cat to eat a whole squirrel. By the third day there was nothing left but a tail.

Has a yellow bill....western cattle egret. There was two hawks on it just a bit ago. Not much left except for the head, legs and lots of feathers.
