Anyone ever run twin turbos on Mopar BB?

WOW!!I found some cool info that no one really seems to know about...I should charge money for this stuff lol...
A company back in the 70' made a turbo set up for 440 RV's,I have pic's of the actual set up as well as info from the State of California Air resources board...Check it out it's a cool but also dry read.

Just wondering...

A friend and I were throwing the idea around. :grin: Two smaller turbos as opposed to one big one so they spool up faster, much lower cost than roots blower (or even centrifugal kit) because much of it can be made yourself, no cuts in the hood either and no pulleys or power loss due to pulley driven system.

I have seen pictures of twin turbos on BBs on other makes on the web, but wondering if anyone on here has ever seen/done it with a Mopar BB.

Twin turbos are the way too go and they have these new turbos that have dual impeller speeds. Do not be fooled by using small turbos. Get them sized correctly. These things make roots blowers completely obsolete. I am a convert. I share a garage with a guy who lives by these things. If i did not have a low key 67 Coronet hemi car and was thinking about building a street motor with a wedge I would put htese on in a second. also centrifigual supercahrgers are a thing of the past also. Consider fuel injection
 
That's a 440 in a Sundance? Holy Cow Batman, that is trick!

Ha ha,,, no the Twin turbo 440 is in a 1989 Daytona.
My "Sundance" is a 1974 Plymouth Satellite Sundance edition 318,I just stroked a 440 to 500ci and stuffed it in.
 
Wow... that is pretty cool info 74sundance. I don't know how on Earth you found that. Interesting that they were using a turbo with water injection back in 1979 for an RV (and taking the water right from the RV water tank... what a great idea).

That turbo converter box that they describe for the carb is pretty much what I was thinking about making... might be able to find one on an old RV somewhere and save lots of time. ???

I still don't know if it would be better to go that way or with a blow-through carb set up... they couldn't use any sort of blow off valve with the draw-through set up, they had to control the boost with restriction on the turbo, which seems like it would inhibit some of the performance. I also don't know if I like the idea of compressed gas/air mix in a tube on top of the engine... the thing could blow up if it ever had a backfire, and you probably wouldn't want to run this mix through an intercooler either, if nothing else, the fuel would condense out of it.

Very good information about all the things that they did to run the 440 with turbos though. Thanks for posting that. :)
 
No prob,I thought a lot of people would like it. I find lot's of people wanting info on how to turbo a 440.One bad thing about that set up is it's a wet turbo so it's not the greatest for performance, a dry turbo is much more efficient.

If I do remember correctly one of the big Hot Rod Magazine events (either pump gas drags or Drag Week) had a twin turbo 472 Hemi Charger that won the event, tried to find it on the net but no luck. I think that the STS system is fng sick!! Makes total sense when you think about it and you can throw it on in a weekend! PLUS its WAY cheaper than anything else you can do with a turbo especially if your relying on someone else for the fabrication portion. Check it out, I think you'll like what you see. . .

I also think that the show Trucks on Spike's "Power Block" just installed one of these kits on a Silverado or something like that. Good luck bro, turbo chargers and V8's just make so much sense its a wonder that more people don't go this route.
 
If you are serious about building a custom turbo system I HIGHLY recommend buying the book (yes, there are still books these days) titled: MAXIMUM BOOST by Corky Bell. It is the bible of turbo system building and can explain every aspect of the system from fuel and timing management to turbo sizing.

My two pennies: I built a low-cost turbo system for my old 88 CRX. yeah, not a Mopar, but I knew nothing about turbos and completed my own system including both a pressure riser/BTM fuel mgmt system and a full computer mapping system. I regularly ran 6 psi on the street (very streetable) and had an adjustable wastegate to run up to 10 psi for track days. For reference, on the little 1.5l I used a T22 from a first gen talon, made my own exhaust manifold adapter, used bigger injectors from a DSM, made my own oil and cooling system, used an intercooler from a starion, a fuel pump from a Mustang, and BOV from a Volvo. It could pass emissions and got between 10 and 45 mpg. Stock it ran 13's all day (FWD) on street tires, and I have surprised everything from porsche's to vipers. No outside stickers or crap, pure stock looking outside. Also, it can be done cheaply, don't be fooled into buying a $900 turbo, used ones are everywhere and using one from a stock vehicle is really the cheapest option. Spend your money on the fuel and timing management system, that is where the real power is at.

After ten long years I will try and re-ignite the love of TURBO'S lol.:bday:

My plan is a 528ci Gen-2 MP hemi with twin turbo's, probably a BBC kit from 'eworldsales' on Ebay and modify the flanges for the hemi heads?
Life's too short for a custom build kit and the track is calling me lol...

For those who think a street turbo car needs twins. This is a single 76mm blow thru 360". Test weight in this video around 4200lbs.

I spoke to a company who specialise in race turbos and they said “why do you want to fit two, when one Biggy will be fine”...
Then someone on another site said a 76mm turbo was only big enough for a 2 litre engine lol...
