Best street tire traction

LOL, yea man! The BFG/TA really doesn't have holding ability at the starting line. Fine for driving around and OK fine when done with a little spirt. The Coopers are just a little better.

Going up the ladder...

BFG DOT Drag Radial, then, The Mickey Thompson sportsman S/R has a good bit more grip then the pair above. Be careful in the rain though with these pair.

Then it's on to a more serious tire. Like the more serious M/T's and Nitto555.

Mine are NT555R Extreme drag radials . size 275--60 R 15 About 28" diameter.
They would work great on a auto trans. car. With my approx .4-425 HP-- 440 and 4 speed --3:55 sure grip, I have broken a diff yoke(742), new left motor mount completely in two, Partially torn new right motor mount, possibly damage to the 742 sure grip. And this within 500 miles. I am now gun shy even with a torque strap and 7290 U joints- billit steel yoke.............................MO

Rut-- Row!!! Same tire but 50 series and 1330 yoke on a Dana 60 and 4.10's. Hope the 4.10's help.

We are a little off from my intention. I am asking about a good traction tire that is common and still good in rain. So far it is BFG/TA.. Cooper Cobra.. and is there something else along those lines that you like? ......................MO

Choices are getting limited in 15" we are almost in a Smith Somion group with the 14" where performance is concerned.

I have Cobras on two cars. Both sets are great on the road with minimal noise. The traction behind my 440 is just a rumor if I mash the go pedal, 3400 stall converter, 3.55s. I don't think the BFs are worth the extra money.

On the 62 Ply 255/60R15 rear, 215/70R15 front

If it were me, I'd keep the nittos. Did you replace both u joints? Assuming you bought quality u joints, I'd say you got all the weak points.

agree, u aint got things right. make it more bullet proof, bigger u joints , tie that motor down better. 450 ain`t that much!

I like my Firestone Firehawk Wide Ovals, good traction but they come loose a bit easy on launch. Nice road tire that works well in the rain. I've been looking at 305/35/19's in a Nitto, after reading this I may just try them... I'm looking for more traction.

Yes, I have. I have gone ahead with my plan: Keep the street drag Nitto's for now--Torque strap, new motor mounts, driveshaft loop, done--I already put a billit steel differential yoke and the 7290 non drilled U joint on . Also checked to be sure my front U joint was non drilled. Both are strong Borg Warners.
This car should be able to break traction on launch on dry pavement. I have been convinced to get the ignition right, before further carb adjustments. So I am waiting for the advance plate limiter with several sets of advance weight springs- already have a Pertronix III points conversion and their 45,000 volt coil. A friend has a distributor set up machine so we can dial it in on the bench. I will post the results...................................MO

I've been looking at the General Tire Altimax RT43 215/70R14 for a modern tech replacement to the F70/14. The tread even kind of reminds me of old polyglas tread.

Those were up in smoke in 60 sec tires and still are.
Last time the GTX had 14s on the back we were in 3rd with the 4 spd manual before it started to move and the 5.0 Mustang was stopped at the next light.
The car behind us never moved and disapeared in the tire smoke left behind.
Remember the forum was about traction tires and not about make me pretty tires.

Right now, it certainly doesn't sound wicked! at 25-3000 RPM, drop the clutch and immediately get , not just a bog, but kill the engine unless I get the clutch pedal back in right away. Rolling a little at that point, out with the clutch, little hesitation, and then goes like stink!...My bet is, the electronic ignition is going to make a big difference.......................MO

In case some folks haven't noticed.....

BFG is not what they used to be in the 1980's.

if you compare specs, you'll find that Coopers and even Mastercraft have better traction, speed, and tread wear numbers.
