Broke down and tried a new converter

Wow. That's a big converter for 2200 stall.
My go-to on converters is: give me a tight small converter over a loose big converter of the same stall, every time!

The convertor companies have gotten really good with the 9 1/2. I am done with anything bigger in diameter on the street if the budget allows. 9 1/2 may be more money but for performance it's worth every penny. Drives nearly like stock. I am a little surprised Dynamic didn't go a little looser yet BSB67..but very nice gain!

We have a old Turbo action 9" J convertor that we run just because we have it and it handles our transbrake..but on the return road I absolutely hate the thing. Its only good for a 1/4 mile at a time. Not streetable at all, it was built 30 years ago though, so I would hope they are more refined now.

I basically was looking for a stock high stall converter as used on a 383 Roadrunner. I couldn't find a good used one so I had this one built from an 11 inch (wide ring gear) core. With the 2.94 rear gears cruising speed is around 2400 rpm, so I didn't want it slipping at cruising speed.

I suppose since this is about Chargers and converters, I'll add my 2 cents from this fall.. I had a fairbanks 3500 or so and with the new 440 was running 11.30s- 40s 1.83 ish 60s.
Dropped in a ATI tree master 5500 and immediately ran a 10.53, before taking out the transmission  . So 8 tenths to the good lol. Should be more in the bag once we get a new trans sorted out. Thinking about a trans brake.

WOW, that is awesome. completely out of my league but awesome.

Supposedly , today's converter technology is world's better than thirty years ago. I bought a GER converter about thirty years ago. I could tell you stories.....!

1.83 60s for an eleven second car? Please don't be offended, but WOW that's slow! Bad converter, or bad traction? (What are your 60s now?)
And, if the trans and the rest of the drivetrain (no 8 3/4s with a brake please) is up to it, I LOVE my transbrake. It doesn't make the car substantially faster, but the car became more consistent, and the driver (me) became better.

Haha no the converter and traction were good. Just a bad combo. No torque. 380cfm heads on a 440. Still don't know what it would pull to, but keeping it chipped at 7000.
Stock crank unfortunately

It was on the chip in every gear, which was part of the problem with the trans. Delayed shifts

Yeah, I can believe that. You're probably leaving the line with 200 more horsepower and torque at 5500 compared to 3500.
You installed a 200 horse nitrous system....... without nitrous, LOL.
(And I would be surprised if my 11 sec combo heads flow 250)

Zactly. ...now what would happen if we DID add 200 horse of nitrous...... ? :D

We have a GER 3500 in a 76 dart sport. Original 360hp car, converter installed in mid 90s era.
Seemed like a good idea at the time.
It was pecular it literally would not move then locked up at 3500. I can only image it was a few more hp to just coming apart inside. LOL I don't think you could call it loose..it was off/on

The first convertor we bought was a 3500 by dayco..behind a 440 it would keep stalling higher and was a rubber band through the traps. Probably worked great behind a 350, not so sure it wasn't a vega convertor.

That GER was the single worst performance part I have ever bought, in 50 years of trying to go fast!
I asked for 3200-3500 stall, and stuck it in my A12, with a rmvb. Well, it stalled 4400 rpm, wouldn't MOVE at less than three grand, and at thirty miles an hour I could put the car in ANY gear, hold my foot in the same place, and car speed and rpm would not change. I swear, it was like they forgot to put a stator in it.

I had a GER just like that in 1990. Put a Dynamic in and picked up 1 sec in the 1/4

Is that all?
Funny thing was I sent it to Frank to see what he could do with it and he just laughed. Bought an 8in from him. Best money I spent. It taught me how important converters are. I kept that GER for 25 years finally threw it in scrap pile. lol

GER was an interesting outfit back then. Remember the “no better converter available at any price” or some words to that effect in their ads?

Anyway thanks for posting this. Gives me some more to think about over the winter.

this one worked better than the GER I had. It drove on the trailer. IN THIS CONDITION better than the GER.
