Burnout technique

Isn't the water box just to clean the tires in? Have alway dried the tires and warmed them after the box.

The purpose of the water is to simply allow the tires to slip and spin easier, making it easier on the car. Also saves wear on the pavement.

Have never raced on a modern track. Always have had rock returns and pit areas. Cleaning particals from the tires was required in the box. Some smoke was required to guarantee the tires were dry before going to the line. Have always considered long lenghty burn outs a show and waste of tires. Maybe this was wrong?

Do you need to use water? I have 13 inch wide tires for the street I rarely burn, but have destroyed many 215/70's from the junk yard.

I generally start my burn out in 2nd at the track and 1st on the street. No problems with starting the burn out in 1st if you want just don't let it grab. I never complete my burn out in 1st. Also at the track I do a fairly hard smoky burn out for first pass and light burnouts after that. Also if you are doing a burn out in drive you are safe as torqueflights apply low gear band in 1st so very little danger to the sprag.

A stock Torque-Flight does not apply the L/R band in D, only in manual low. However when the speed comes up it will shift. Again wheel speed is the key, no need for 1st.

I do what most do and start in second at the front edge of the water and spin her up to about 6K and shift to second. Then I wait to see the smoke or if I feel the car pushing forwaed. Then I let off the gas completely and roll out and roll right up and stage. Ron
