From my experience, a car cover is good for a car that is garaged, versus under a carport, tree, or other overhang. I don't know of a quality cover that lasts more than a year or so outdoors with or without a shelter of some sort.
Mine are inside unless I'm driving them, so I usually lay a couple of big, thick bed comforters on them if they are not going to be driven for an extended period. Since you have a carport, about all you can do is spring for a top-quality, formed cover built specifically for your car. Or, if you have access to a really good, top-quality upholsterer that does boat covers, see what they can do for you.
