All the stuff I ordered from Summit is here already (1 day delivery? WOW).
Reckon this is going to be a Saturday attempt. Hope I remember everything, such as:

1. Do you guys use the supplied material gaskets with the bathtub, or just the bathtub itself?

2. When the timing marks on the cam and crank sprockets are lined up and the timing mark
on the balancer is at TDC, the oil pump/distributor driveshaft slot should face front-back on the engine,
right? Or am I backwards there?

3. Right off-hand, does anyone remember the torque specs on the crank and cam bolts?

Forgive the silly questions, but it's been 25 years or better since I last did this.
Looking forward to it, though.

I can answer #3: 135 on the crank on 30-35 on the cam.

Hi Ed, cam bolt 40lbs, crank bolt 135lbs.

distributor slot is like you thought { front to back in line with the crank }

I have used felpro alum tubs only {no fiber} they are embossed around the runners / ports I have not had one leak , I use just napa gasket sealer around the runners / ports
silicone at the corners were the block & head meet under the tub edges before the bars are clamped down.
Pipe dope on the intake bolts.

Sorry you lost the cam , but hey you was wanting a new one
I think you will like the new one better.

Yep, I've always done the bathtubs the same as you describe, always wondered why they send
fiber gaskets along with it. Figured I might have been doing it wrong all these years.

Yeah, come to find out maybe all my tuning issues with the motor before was in part due to this
cam being hurt, eh? I dunno, I'm just going to trust that the rest of the motor is ok. Don't really
have much choice there, money being tight as it is.
Docs and hospitals taking big-arsed chunks out of my hide these days and all...

Come to find out, Summit didn't have my cam in stock after all. Crap.
They kinda screwed up on that part.
Good news is it's coming directly from Comp now; they shipped it yesterday out of Memphis.
Should be here by Friday afternoon I HOPE. I have to do this on this weekend, no choice.
Things get medically hairy starting Monday again. :-(

For those following this thread, I have more pics
Since the cam isn't due until tomorrow, I figured I'd do some prep work, so I dropped the oil pan and boy, am I glad I did.
Lots of fine metal "slurry" down there (remnants of the cam lobes and lifters, no doubt).
Also glad I had put in a magnetic drain plug. That thing just paid for itself.

Yep, those stampings mean the block is a 1976 one with (originally) a cast crank.
It now has a forged crank. Rods look substantial, too.
Couldn't tell much else with the pan off. Has a windage tray on it, too.

No idea what "JW" means. QC stamp? I'll assume "9 18" is a date of some sort.

Job complete! Comp cams Magnum 270, their lifters, their assembly lube and their oil additive for break-in.
Took the opportunity to use a FelPro intake bathtub that blocks off the heat cross-over, too.
Only thing that I screwed up on at first is I had the distributor 180 off at first crank attempt. Oops.

I am VERY impressed with the quality of the Comp products. I'm very relieved that it appears all ills
have been addressed so far and the cam makes great vacuum, too.

It has just a slight lope to it, but that's ok. I think this one is going to live a while longer.

Man it looks and sounds GREAT!!

I havent had a cam go flat since i switched to brad penn oils and double up on comp additive...knock on wood.

I also use oregon cams to build my cams.

How did you make sure your open and closed pressures were ok for you comp cam?

Did you use ICL when you degreed it or not feel the need to use icl when degreeing due to not having asymmetrical lobes ( i dont think your cam has asymmetric lobes)?

Yep, what a relief that a)it turned out great and b)I can still do this stuff, apparently. At least for now.

Yes, I'll have to make a decision on oil/additives pretty dang quick, since Comp recommends changing the oil right after break-in. Since I live in Podunk, USA, choices are a little limited (no Brad Penn, for example). Thinking of the Lucas additive.

Nope, no asymmetrical. Cam degreed right in and the new double roller didn't fight at all going back on.
As far as springs went, I told the Comp rep what I had and he readily agreed they'd be fine.

For an off-the-shelf grind, I'm really liking it so far. It even pushes 14-15hg vacuum @ idle. I was able to set the timing by ear at first (while watching the vacuum gauge for max), then backing off the idle screw on the Holley to the point it was pretty much backed out. REAL happy about that.

Whats the rest of your exhaust look like? Dont suppose you know your compression ratio bein its a mystery motor.....would be nice to know.

Congrats Ed, Cam sounds real good , I like it. the shop is looking good wish mine was that straight.

Gonna WAG that it's pretty tame from the sound of it. I recognized the forged crank and rods when I had the pan off, but beyond that is ???

The exhaust (also a former owner-installed thing) is friggin 3" all the way from the headers with Flowmasters.
Once finances improve (if I can forego medical facilities for a while), first time an issue appears with it, I'm going to the usual 2.5 headpipes/2.25 tailpipes with tips. I like how the factory stuff sounds, albeit with a bit louder set of mufflers.

Oh heck, almost forgot. Reckon I can put some 72's on the primaries of the Holley now? Seems like I remember the 440hp motors liked those out of the box.
