DePouli's 1969 Charger 318

There isn't a lot you can do about the compression variation without major work. ..... you want them all within 10% of each other but, I've seen, had and ran with numbers worse than yours without issue.

The plug fouling. ..... might try a higher heat range plug in those holes AFTER triple checking timing, vacuum, ignition and carb.....

I wouldn't let it bother you too much.....could be as simple as 3 crumby plug wires...???

Think I got the alternator sorted today. Thanks for the tip on that. Also noticed a very slight leak at the bypass hose so got that fixed too.

Bought a Pertronix II system to replace the existing Pertronix system. Doing that tomorrow.

Also think my blower motor one speed only on low issue might be the resistor (not original to the car) so looking for a replacement to try for giggles to see if that sorts it out.

My fuel gauge is a bit off. I think I need to adjust the float in the tank is all, but the tank is full so not right now...

This AM I replaced the pertronix.

Little concerned that the old rotor looked liked this.

I cannot gap the new pertronix II to 0.030 per the direction. And I feel like the new one is rubbing too. There is some play in the plate. Got to think about this more.

Now for the good news.

I retarded the timing by ear and the car instantly idled better in park. In gear it stalled out. I then advanced the timing hair by hair until it would idle and idle well in gear.

Now it runs much better, definitely have some power now and can squeel the tire some. It's a little hard to start warm but not bad. Gonna see how it is cold and maybe play some more with it and maybe out a timing light on it.

My 318 is an *** to start warm.....
I don't touch the gas...just crank for several seconds and it fires.....nothing that FI won't fix! LOL

How much side to side play is there on your distributor? If it's making contact with the pickup the bushings are most likely worn.

I love the Pertronix II and III drop in ignitions. You can bypass the ballast resistor as well. Looking very good!

It's pretty meh...

What do u think?

How about the center piece on the distributor where the rotor goes? If that has play it can make contact as it spins with the pickup on the advance plate. Maybe cause erratic ignition as well.

oh hey, Sorry been gone from the forum for a while.

I've been restoring a 1930 Buick Series 61 5 passenger sedan. here is the build thread https://forums.aaca.org/topic/33583...-over-where-dad-left-off-1930-buick-series-61
as for the Charger she's running great and I've just been enjoying her with the family and making minor tweaks. I replaced the fuel sending unit with the original OEM one and my gauge now reads correct. Also got the AC system ready to charge up and run just haven't done it yet.

I was hoping to get my Senior at Charlotte AACA and then take it to the AACA Grand National in Allentown, but with Charlotte cancelled I guess I will go for my senior at Hershey.

I bought an NOS dual rear speaker setup with all the wires and everything so I need to install that.

but like I said I've just been enjoying her, she's running great.

I guess I should update what I did to get it running good. After I replaced the pertronix I adjusted the timing by ear and then by foot. I am testing my memory here I think I had to retard it some from where it was. I played between best running spot and still being able to easily start it. Then once I got to that point I have a big hill in the neighborhood, so I drove over there romped on it and then come back and tweak until I got the hesitation out of it. Took a few times.

yeah not the book method, but it worked as she's a pleasure to drive now.

Also took a few times but got the trans linkage just barely adjusted right to be in all the right spots. It's not quite as perfect as I want it but most of the time it is fine and I use the parking brake liberally now just to be sure.
