2002 Dakota 4.7 4x4...my ABS light is flashing and beeping

I was chasing another issue (TPS), which is now resolved (I think)... it was not as easy as replacing the sensor...... seems like there was resistance within the plug/wire/pin connection, no visible corrosion, but its only 18 ga wire...... very inconsistent and a pain in the *** to diagnose

in the coarse of trouble shooting, I swapped in my 01 Durango computer to see If it picked up the same code; it did, and I ruled out my Dakota computer having an issue.

I put the Dakota computer back in, continued my troubleshoot, found my issue, and fixed it......no TPS code, awesome

but after reinstalling the computer, the ABS light flashes and beeps non stop....... I pulled the 40 amp ABS fuse, it stopped the annoying beep and now the ABS is lit solid.

brakes are normal, but I'm clueless as to WTF happened........ I'm all ears, thanks

Does the ABS have it's own controller or module that has to be reset?

Hell if I know. Just spitballin here.

are you a Dodge tech, either current or former? :poke:

:carrot:
Damn gif.gif

Which vehicle has the ABS issue ?

PCMs back then ( or now really ) Do not like to be swapped from vehicle to vehicle.
Best I remember even back then they were Vin Assigned and swapping them can and usually does cause all kinds of issues

And Yes, I am a former Dodge Dealer tech. Been out of the dealer rat race since about 2009 though and my memory is not what it used to be

The Dakota......after plugging the Durango computer into the Dakota and starting the engine....... because of the chip key, it only ran for seconds, but long enought to throw the TPS code I was looking for.

this verified my Dakota computer wasn't malfunctioning

when I reinstalled the Dakota computer, I have the flashing ABS that will not go away...... no ABS codes present as far as I can tell

Hey! I was a Dodge/Plymouth/Chrysler tech. Left for a better opportunity in 1978. What is this ABS you speak of?:)

Dakota and Durango were similar but swapping PCMs between different vehicles is really not the best idea. They are programmed by the VIN. You need a scan tool to properly change the PCM. 2002 would be a DRB. Not sure if anyone still uses a DRB or if the latest scan tool has all the old stuff incorporated into it now. That's an old truck though might be tough to find someone with a scan tool that will work.

If you were digging around in the wiring... retrace your steps and see if you disturbed something. Maybe find a wiring diagram and see if the TPS wire is near a wire for the ABS module.

Did you check the fluid level? Has there been any brake work done recently? If you did and had to bleed the brakes there is a procedure in the scan tool for the ABS. Most of the time it's not necessary but every once in a while you need to go through it.

If I remember right there is a way to cycle the ABS module. Could be something in the module is stuck. Could also be a wheel speed sensor.

Low tech comment but the sensors at each wheel hub (on inside facing of hub) have a sensor pointing at what looks like a gear, check the sensors are in position and that the gear is clean of grud.
That was an easy fix on a 1999 Chrysler I had.

Not a Dodge Tech.

But I can assure you the ABS light is not beeping.
So good news there!:)

Tone ring?

Generally the beeping only occurs when the warning lamp has failed... The module detects a open circuit on the warning lamp circuit so it actives the beeper...

There is probably a fault in something other than the ABS system causing the fault... They typically only backup systems deemed critical with a beeper so possibly the airbag system has a fault...

An OEM scan tool will tell you what's going on... Cheap aftermarket scan tools probably won't.... Higher end ones might...

I thought someone might know of a reset procedure........ truck didnt move, I didnt touch the brake, engine ran for no more than 5 seconds on the other computer.
