Dogs

This one was a pup from a rescue. Quiet, obedient and gentle but is a destructive little ****. She's nearly 3 now and calmed down a lot.

Dexter is just a big goof and a gentle soul.

It is kind of like picking out you car, get what fits. If you need a big dog for protection and temperment, a Lab can't be beat. Me, I want a dog small enough to take camping comfortably, but big enough to take a second thought about. For me, it's the Dacshund- not the mini variety. Ours weighs in at about 25 lbs, and is pound for pound the most unrelenting watch/guard dog we've owned. He kills woodchucks for fun if we let him. But let's our 1 yr old grandson pull his ears without a peep. They are an extremely loyal breed, however not all that sociable- they do not like strangers. Oh, and he won't eat you out of house and home either.
And by all means, get a male - they are best. But I think we know that........

My daughter does rescue work for all breeds and has a Kuchi dog that came back from Afghanistan that the US Army picked up. VERY protective, bred for herding; I've been around her probably 20 times & she still looks at me like an intruder! Don't come in the house when no one's around!!!

Also, large breed dogs don't last as long in years. Of course, after you get attached, none of them last as long as you'd wish.

So the granddaughters want a dog. There old enough now to be responsible. I suggested a lab. From the little i know there great dogs and do well with kids and families. My question is I've seen really big ones like a neighbor has and others not quite that big. Are some bigger than others? I also like Dobermans as there short hair and my uncle had severally found them to be excellent animals with good temperaments. I went to a party recently and they had a Male, the dog was very well behaved and would not leave me alone wanting to be petted. A very good dog but the owner said can be very defensive if a stranger enters the property but yet in that social circle of a house party that dog was very graceful and affectionate. As some are more in the know whats your opinions. I think they might want a lab but im not sure.
Mutts are generally the most even tempered, best w Kids. Loyal as hell cuz They know what You've saved them from. Do a Rescue!

Here's a picture of my Great Dane when I was up visiting 747Mopar . . . Yes, he's BIG !

This thread is equal to asking what caliber pistol a person should buy.

Good Point . . . But isn't "bigger always better" ? ? ? ? ? ? ( smile )

Winston's ( my mastiff ) trick was to let people into the yard and up to the front door then he would sit at the bottom of the front steps and "keep " them there until someone got home . never bit anyone ( slobbered on a few but )
an 18 moth old Winston ( not the greatest pic but only one I have )

It's easy to love them when you understand their personality. This girl (Lucy) loves to get dressed up. My favorite thing for her is a miniature jockey to ride on her back (don't have a photo of this on my iPad). When she runs with the jockey on her back, you'd think she was a real horse the way the jockey bobs up and down!

Our Chihuahuas are as different as night and day temperamentally speaking.
They are AKC. Some of that variation in all "breeds".
Some dogs are not bred to be smart. But there are exceptions within those breeds.

Does a pound puppy count as a rescue dog?
If so, the big yellow dog that we got some years ago was sick.
250 dollars later after a change of vets, got him well with massive tetracycline..
Rumor had it that the county pound we got him from was not vaccinating for "kennel cough".
That's what we heard, anyway.

Unlike other dog, every story I've heard about German Shepherds being aggressive was that the aggression was directed at someone other than the owner's family.
That was my experience too. After mine showed aggressiveness toward the kid next door who was in my yard, I never trusted her around strange kids.
Otherwise, I think Shepherds are excellent family dogs. Never heard of one turning on the owner.
They can have a strong prey drive and are protective.
My experience does not mean someone else does not have a different story.

They don't smell or shed.
Pudel Hund
The word Pudel is derived from the Low German verb meaning "to splash about",

Steve I have four Labradors and you are correct. Some are 100lbs some are 60lbs.
They are very loyal, very friendly and more affectionate than words can describe.
They are truly man's best friend, they are good with children (provided the children are good to them.) I have two that live inside with me and they love my 15 month old son. They are also very intelligent and relatively easy to housebreak.
There are a few drawbacks though. They she'd lots and love to lay on the furniture. Vacuuming and sweeping are a constant chore. (Hardwood floors help). Also they need exercise, if you live in town they need walked daily, (Im fortunate to live in the country, I just let them out a few times a day.) Training collars help. Once they learn, you never need to zap them. Just wearing the collar makes them mind their manners. They also like to chew and fetch and smuggle contraband back indoors. It's comical the things that mine try. If you are serious about it, then it's a good option so long as you have a backyard. Also be advised they aren't that smart around vehicles typically, when they are young. They try to direct traffic and get hit sometimes.
I would go with a female, they are smaller and settle down a little quicker.
My female is a yellow lab 70lbs
My male is a black lab 90lbs.

Now that's funny RC
That was very funny, Thank you Bud and everyone for your advice. The dog is for my daughter, she never had a dog but son-in-law did. Of course when they travel your reading who will doggie sit which is probably easier than baby sitting LOL. I wanted to offer them some solid advise which i have now.

Cut this out of a magazine years ago:

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion. *unknown*

Love many breeds of dogs. Especially like the labs though. As some of you know we lost Mocha, our chocolate lab in Sept. We all miss her. My wife especially misses her. She just turned 10, we rescued her when she was 8 or 9 months old. She was a great dog. Like many of you say they are family members and don't stay with us long enough. She was always full of energy and loved playing. We'd give her a rawhide bone and she would carry it around for days showing it off. She also loved for us to through it in the house so she could chase it. She was smart too. My wife taught her several tricks. She even tried to get her to do the dog agility stuff but Mocha just kept peeing on the course LOL!
She is resting in piece now with her bo, my mom's boyfriends Black Lab, out on the farm by the pond.
