Rebel & Morty are cute together, big ol tough dog & his lil' kitten

My old shop cat would sleep on top of my yellow lab, before the cat went to sleep he would need his claws in my dogs skin. Boz the dog would not move just let the cat do it.

My daughter sent me this pic tonight. She was following me back from the ranch about sunset. That's Diesel the Newfoundland sitting next to me. What you can barely see is the sticker in the back window that reads: RELAX IT'S A NEWFIE, NOT A FREAKIN' BEAR.

Yesterday was Lilly's first birthday ! It also marked her 4 month anniversary since we rescued her.

As I have always done, my dogs birthdays are special days. Once my favorite pet store opened, her and I climbed in the car. She even got to ride shotgun !
I was a little concerned that it might not happen due to her being unsure of herself and a bit reactive in some previous attempts at meeting people ( I would love to get my hands on the people that "raised" her before being rescued). Anyway, I did not need to worry. She stood in the car until I got her leashed and only hopped out when I told her "OK". She met a young woman in the parking lot that thought she was the most beautiful dog she had ever seen. Lilly just calmly walked over and sniffed her and loved the pets and attention. Then it was into the store ! I could see there were like 3 customers and 2 staff. I tightened my hold on the leash. I didn't need to. She was great just checking out the store and the smells. She didn't growl or carry on with any sort of naughty behavior. She was a good sweet dog. We looked at toys, since that is one of the reasons for going. She was quite discerning and chose a Kong Teddy Bear, which she carried everywhere until we checked out. We also got 2 of their fresh made dog cookies, the main reason for going to this store. We got 2 so Boomer could have one...birthdays are shared ! She ate hers in the car, then fell asleep for the ride home with her head on her teddy. At home she played gently with teddy, so I left her with my wife and took Boomer for a walk at the park. All was good as she slept most the time we were gone. Just before noon, we piled them both in the car and embarked upon the next birthday tradition...going for a cheeseburger !! Lilly and Boomer split one (I cut it into 1 inch bites) and my wife and I split one. Then we had a big walk at a different park to aid digestion. It was a nice warm day 75 degrees ! So, we spent the rest of the day until sunset just sitting around playing with the dogs.
It was a great 1st birthday for Lilly ! She was so happy and just loving life and everything.

We almost missed it as both my wife and I are just getting over a nasty bout of covid. This was our first foray out into the world again. What a great day it was !

Sounds like a wonderful tradition.
Sometimes a dog will surprise you. I'm planning on taking one of my shepherds back to California this trip, but I have to take him in the box truck, so in the front seat. I have tried that with him before, didn't get out of the driveway.
This time, my girlfriend found a strap/leash that plugs into the seat belt, and we experimented again. It works good. Trip planned.
Anyway, after the front seat test, we went for a walk, just Magnum and me. We met a neighbor that we had never met before, and i was a little leary of how my deaf shepherd would react to a total stranger. He was good as gold, just like Lilly! A sniff, a pat, a sit, and a head scratch....new friend.

They are resilient and will come back. It can take a while and a lot of positive experiences as some dogs are more sensitive than others. I've been taking my new girl to dog friendly stores and public events, encouraging anybody and everybody who cares too, to show her attention. Yesterday I asked a lady if she wanted to hold her and of course she did. My little girl (still no name*) snuggled right into her neck and started chewing on her hair. The lady laughed and we had one more positive experience under the belt. It was so cute. *Kitsch, I believe, is German for garbage.

I resist people names, but the lady who held her yesterday suggested Claire. That's a sweet name. I thought about Kandy because she is so sweet and only two in 100,000 people name their daughter Candy. I forgot to ask "Robert"s person if anybody ever took offense.

I have thought that maybe I should have named Lilly, Heidi. It is a name that is not often used by people anymore…at least in this country. I had a girl dog from 2003-2016 that I named Schatze (my treasure in German).

I like Heidi too. My best friend had a chow mix named Heidi, loved women, didn't like men at all.
I thought of Licorice. Likker for short.

I really like hearing about your deaf shepherd! It does my heart good !
Okay then, Trooper, this is for you.
Unlike some deaf dogs, Magnum doesn't seem to be remotely aggressive to people, other than being jealous as heck if somebody else is getting affection. Anybody getting petted, he'll have his nose in there in a heartbeat! But he is aggressive as heck if somebody has a ball.....and he doesn't!
I play with them all at least four or five times a day. If I don't, Mopar sits in front of me and just stares, won't let me scratch her head, she just ducks and says "you KNOW what we want!"
Outside, I have a long downhill sidewalk in the back yard. Hemi and Cudabug always want to play tug-a-war, but Mopar and Magnum have a routine. I'll stand at the bottom of the hill, Mopar will roll her ball toward me, Magnum will drop his, grab Mopars' and then try to keep the ball he just dropped with his paws. Mopar will knock it loose, roll it down the hill, and I kick it...
and it's off to the races.
Sometimes I can get Magnums ball away from him (he actually gives it up the best of my four) and throw it to the farthest reaches of the yard. Magnum ALWAYS gets a head start on the throw. Occasionally it lands where he doesn't expect, and he doesn't see it.... or hear it of course, and he will have the most forlorn and confused look on his face. But, he always finds it, and he will chase it till I get tired of throwing it.
Between the four of them, playing with them wears ME out!

That’s great !! I have always spent a lot of time outside, regardless of the season playing with my dogs. It is good for them and me. When we are all panting, then we go do some chores for a bit. By then it is time for more play. Having fun with them makes me happy.
