DOGS

Our girl [Mishka] went in to have a cancerous tumor removed from her right-front leg. Surgery was successful, but the prognosis is upcoming. She's behaving like normal, even though she has a ghastly incision on that leg.

Hopefully she has a great & full speedy recovery...

poor girl

I am very fond of Magnum. I love shepherds. He always appears to be a snuggle bum, much like my boy KC was.

Today is the first anniversary of Buddy’s passing. The 2nd of 3 dogs that passed last year. KC was the first in January. Then Buddy, and Tilly in June. I will forever hate 2023.
Man 3 in a year, that's heartbreaking for sure...

glad you got another 2 too

I’m thinking about you Matt. Make the best of your day by thinking about the good times you had with the three of them.

Matt, (and everybody else too, lol) Magnum did EXCELLENT today! I gambled on him being social, and a friend and I took him to a car show, and he was golden. Got petted, gave kisses to the kids.
Then went to see another friend, who loves and owns the Mal puppy we had. She is half Magnums size, but played like they were friends from way back. But man, Sheela hasn't mellowed a bit, at least around me, lol
85 lb laid back shepherd, and a 50lb would-be shepherd on crack.... but VERY well trained.
Shoulda got pics, didn't think. Sorry.
So proud of my guy..... (but don't tell my gf, please!)

out for a ride in the Ranger. Hard to steer when he is sleeping on the steering wheel

WTG Magnum ! Good boy !

Lilly has to be the calmest Mal on earth. She loves to chase her squirrels, but is very content to lay in the yard with a good stick. Boomer is the high energy guy. It is like the energy gene got swapped in them. Calm relaxed Mal, wild high energy lab mix.
I spend a lot of time with them training and playing everyday. Watching them learn is great, and they playing is fun. They are bringing my happy back. I can think of KC, Buddy, and Tilly without my eyes getting damp. Maybe Boomer and Lilly like seeing my progress too.

Jocko almost has this down to a science. Jams his ball inside his tire.

I took Cora out for a walk today, like I do very day. With Ridgebacks especially, but other active dogs in general you have to exercise them every day to burn off calories and energy. I have to walk her away from other dogs not necessarily because she is aggressive, because she can be sometimes, but mostly because Ridgebacks play so rough you would swear that they are killing each other. It is literally a running, swirling mass of teeth and claws not unlike The Tasmanian Devil in Bugs Bunny cartoons. Some dogs can take that and enjoy it, some not so much.

Anyway…
I generally drive her a few miles out of town to either the gun range or our daughter’s acreage. Both are about a half mile apart. The other day there was two sets of very large wolf tracks on the gun range road. The wolves must have been close because at one spot Cora stopped and refused to move forward. She sat down in the road and would not take another step. She has never done this before or since. The next day she had no problem advancing past that spot so I believe that the wolves were very, very close. Cora is a tough fighter but not two wolves tough so today we decided to go to daughters place, instead.
This weekend we were supposed to have dog races in town. This is a big deal in this part of the world. People and dog teams come for hundreds and sometimes over a thousand miles to watch or participate. It’s the northern equivalent of The Super Bowl. Yesterday they had to cancel them due to cold temperatures and wind. Consider that for a moment; too cold for sled dogs.
So today I still had to walk the dog. Wife put the jacket on Cora and we went to daughters to walk. Within thirty seconds of exiting the Jeep her muscles cramped up and she couldn’t move. Too cold for sled dogs indeed.
Picture of the goofy jacket. Its purpose is to keep the wind off of her but it can only do so much.
The irony of it possibly having wolf fur on the hood is not lost on us.

My 8+ y/o now, lab Elvis does the same thing
I'll throw 2 or more toys tell him to
go get his tire & his big ball or spiked ball
"bring back or go get both"
he loves his tire,
he does it with 2 1ltr bottles too & a stuffed bear too
funny sometimes, to see him work it out, but he does...

Lately When I finish eating something, I have to show my hands to the dog like I'm a black jack dealer...
