69 440, mild, 15" vacuum. Idle will kill you, think it is lean; plugs tan, exhaust sooty black, runs good under cruise or power. Water, not antifreeze, out the tail pipes. Read that lean mix on primary (750 edelbrock, leaned jets in primary) will lean out the idle circuit? Not rich smell, head ache, like too much hc.

What kind of heads? Just went through this with roller set up, needed to tighten the valves also check your choke if you have one.

Did you verify you have the original jets and rods per the Eddy book? I have the same carb on a mild 440 and it runs great. I did have to go 4% richer in the secondaries to cure a slight stumble when I got on it but otherwise it's stock.

Also check the float level. Should be 7/16". Fuel pressure at 5-8 PSI? Timing is where it's supposed to be? Mild 440 probably 10-15 I with 36 total. No vacuum leaks? I suppose it's possible the idle feed restrictor is partially plugged. It's the small long brass tube on the booster venturi.

No it is rich. Tan plugs are OK, slightly rich. Lean it out a hair and adjust timing, pump shot, throttle plate position, etc.

Ok, we just had it on the dyno; lessened the pump shot, set timing at 13 and 40. Still needs 4 sizes up on sec, 2 up on primary (original rods, but sec was .102, primary, ?. and a disappointing rear wheel 337 hp, 361 torque.

But the timing addded 57 hp at 5400, where it started to fall off.

now the owner just called; no power, rich, sputtering at 4000 rpm. Guess its time to replace the dissy (procomp, with a loose cap), and yank the carb off.

procomp billet distrib? have timing issues? Bend the tabs inside to get the limit stops to adjust to where you need them. Bend them inward, had to do this on mine to get down to 10 initial and 36 total worked great. saved me from buying another one, only problem is it is Chinese made :(

Well we found plenty of problems today. Replaced the carb, lost the secondary bog, almost. Replaced the dist with a msd. The procomp- 1 reluctor blade @10, 2 @008, the rest hitting , no wobble in the shaft.

Engine wanted 22 at idle, dist had 25 mech in it, so set it at 15, giving 40 total. NO PING???? at good load, driving. In drive, 1st to 2nd shift @ 70 mph, 5000 rpm. At top of 2nd, rpm climb slowed down at 4400 rpm, not stumbling. ?????
