went to motor vehicle and got plates situated........ came home and crashed 6 hours.......... I was pretty smoked :wtf:

new dryer, and new condenser; this morning I put a vacuum on the A/C and gave it a 3 oz 134a oil shot and 2 - 12 oz cans (134a)......... 27 oz total

system calls for 1.87 pounds; so that should be real close......

anyway, air blows ice cold, which is awesome; but the evaporator began icing up and blocking the air flow in about 15 miles.

so my question for the real mechanics, or HVAC guys; I never had one do that, is this a case of a little too much freon? or not quite enough? I bet @hunt2elk knows the answer :poke:

Usually if it ices up, it's too little. But then again it shouldn't be icing up and blowing cold.

Is the coil clean?

it blows very cold, then I noticed the air flow from the vent began to decrease....... a lot

I pulled into the driveway and turned off the a/c compressor, it continued to blow cold and gradually warmed up....... I sat in the truck for a minute or 2

when I got out, water was pouring out of the drain........ more than normal, I assume it was the ice melting

Sometimes while driving you can switch over to outside air and shut off the compressor and it'll thaw out the coil and once that happens, turn on the compressor and see if it freezes up again. I used to have ice cold AC in a Challenger that do that and then it was fine. This was before I knew how to add freon or do anything with auto AC. My 95 Dakota has a super slow leak (getting faster these days) but the firewall leaks so bad that it never freezes up. My dad had some AC work done to it a lot of years ago and I'm thinking (I'm pretty sure actually) that the morons that worked on it didn't know what they were doing. The FW leaks so bad that at 70 mph, the AC is almost worthless. Always meant to fix it but something else always had priority and the beater didn't see the freeway all that much anyways.

yeah, I can mange it; but it's a lot to expect from the wife if she uses the truck....... I also want to avoid any system damage

I probably know someone with a set of gauges, and pretty sure any professional advice I get will push me in that direction........ but if it's a case of bleeding off a little freon, or adding a little; I'd like to keep it simple and handle it myself

Yep, that would be the ice melting. Sounds like yer a bit short on the freon. Definitely get yerself a set of gauges and top it off.

no worries, nobody in the history of the world has ever worked harder at not having a job than me :blah::blah::blah:

I just fished new steel trans lines through the maze, what a pain in the nads....... I need a shower
Man, in the late 80's and well into the 90's, I worked at the plant and 'our' mom and pop furniture store (I was the back), and was building engines AND rear ends. Thought about going full time into doing rear ends but decided not to and glad I did lol. Also told the wife at the time to sell the store to our competitor if they came in for the 3rd time trying to buy us out because I was done being the back. I hurt all the time.....she got help for her in the store but never found any for me....geez.

Figured the truck was just for you. My wife drove all my junk but wasn't particularly happy with that. She was extremely hard on brakes and the throttle and could warp just about any kind of disc except for the heavy duty ones on her 2000 Durango. That was the only vehicle that stood up to her abuse and she finally killed it when it was almost 18 years old by melting the engine. I would say it's a tad low like Mario said. I have a set of gauges that my nephew gave me when he closed up his shop. They are from HF but seem to work ok. Heck, most times I don't bother to use them lol

Freezing up = it's undercharged... Throw a set of gauges at it to confirm...

A/C sorted out........ my hillbilly vac and charge was insufficient (out of my lane again)

anyway, I'm out cruising cool and trouble free and all of a sudden the entire A/C system shuts off; fan, a/c light, all of it, like I blew a fuse. :wtf:

so I cut the switches off and head home to investigate..........

I headed straight to the blower motor, not sure why......... but I immediately notice someone has been here before, looks like a replacement plug and a pigtail........ and it's burnt. The wire on the end is ground, it was also heated further up the line where the splice was done.

so I head out to the Durango just to take a look for comparison...... and my original plug was in the process of failing....... ah hah, common problem.

Is the plug on the air box?

I'll be out with mine most of the day tomorrow. I'll definitely give the ac a workout with the heat we've been getting. Won't hurt to check it out.

right under the blower motor, pass side interior........ in plain site

2 8mm screws will remove the resistor if the plug is stuck, mine was
use a mirror, makes life easier

The plug cooks because the blower is drawing to many amps... Bearings are probably shot...

I swiped the blower motor........ too easy, 3 bolts under the dash, didn't see that coming

back in the day, I had a nearly flawless record of removing glued windshields without breaking them. I got this one out 90% and cracked it.......... not sure if I'm pissed more about the broken glass or losing my touch after a couple of decades....... but I'm still bitching about it

its like 2/3 hundred bucks just went out the window, no pun intended :BangHead:

Ha, ha, sometimes you lose. A new one won't have any blast marks on it anyway.
