Exhaust Recommendations?

I don’t know which Dynomax ultra flows you have, nor what SuperTurbos folks are recommending.

If you go Superturbo, I recommend the 17748s. 20” long body, 25.5” overall. They will be a little quieter than the long Ultras, but still noticeably louder than stock.
I agree on the long body Super Turbos. Even the shorter ones will not have the cruise drone that the Ultra Flows have.

Find my thread on doing a quiet exhaust. I wrapped it up last fall with a post detailing how to get a 440 to be as quiet as a new car and not lose power. With headers you won’t get that quiet, but it will have that cool tinging sound at the engine. My goal was met, I despise drone and I drive and drive all I can, I don’t care for loud exhaust. Especially when I do my weekly security sweep around the industrial park…

I listed my entire solution. Short story is dynomax super turbos and resonators. There is a chart in there a member made that shows the flow of many kinds of mufflers. The super turbo is a solid choice, the resonator does the rest.

My suggestion is to install Vibrant brand resonators in back. Then change the mufflers if you don’t get to the place you want to be. A true resonator will not cut power at all. It will basically bounce the sound around inside it and cancel it out. I found the can style to do the trick, they do make and ultra quiet that is a bit bigger body. Their tech said it does cut more sound, but it’s only like 10-15% more. I thought it would be too close in my 69 GTX. Been decades since my last charger so I don’t know of you’d have a tad more room or not.

Consider how it is hung as well, that can affect you getting vibrations in the car. My interior buzz is gone now, I used to get some trim that would do that at certain rpm.

Here is the flow chart...

Another thing to think about would be sound insulation. I pulled my interior and installed Killmat on the floors and in the doors and rear panels. Added a thicker package-panel. Most importantly, I installed rolled duct insulation behind the rear seat. It has made an amazing difference.

Sam, I think the chart was done by Wayne state university quite a while ago to show the flow differences between the then popular turbo mufflers vs open pipe.
Correct, No OEM mufflers were tested - I guess they weren't considered a performance muffler.

Otherwise, the chart is comprehensive. I avoided jail with the purchase of OEM Hemi mufflers, so I have a fondness for them.

Some late model Chargers/Challengers with a Hemi have a muffler that kinda looks like a Magnaflow. It's a straight through design, oval case. I put a single on my /6 '68 Dart and it sounded pretty stock-ish, I was surprised. I was actually planning on it being temporary but I ended up leaving it on there. I would check with your local muffler shop to see if they have cut offs if you're interested in that route.

Here is the wrap up post info I made a few months ago-

Sound is EXACTLY what I wanted. No more drone, no more vibrating interior pieces. Sounded good when floored. It was an hour and fifteen minute ride home so I got a decent feel for it. Well worth the time since this is the fifth car he’s done for me.

Recipe for a quiet car-

Remflex manifold gaskets

Rocket restoration thick flanges(guy said they look a lot like what he carries, but his shop isn’t your average place so don’t chance it)

2.5 pipe from manifolds to tips

Flowmaster x pipe

Dynomax Super Turbos, the biggest body one with offset in and center out

Vibrant 12” resonators, can style in 2.5 fit by gas tank.

Accurate 2.5” bore factory style tips.

Main hangers are factory style, with the 2.5 sizing from Accurate as well. Issue in drivers side is that bolt in hanger mount didn’t drop as much as the welded pass side one, required him to extend the hanger maybe an inch or so. Pretty easy, but that added to the time. Worth it to get level mufflers side to side.

The factory style tip hangers we used were bought for another car years ago from Dales Cuda Shop. Ended up not using them on that car, I assume you can still buy these from him.
