hard starting and bogging problem on my 73 roadrunner 318+2

Hey guys so looks like im gonna be driving the 318 around for a while yet as the 440 isn't gonna be ready for some time. I had a hard starting and more of a bogging problem last year I'm gonna need to address now. So when i start the car the second time in one day after she cools she starts kinda hard and I have to pump the gas quite a bit to get her fired up. Whats worse though is that whenever I start it unless I let it sit and warm up forever and even sometimes after I do for a while while I'm driving it bogs when I give it gas and almost chokes out after a while it clears up but it's damn annoying. this is on my 73 roadrunner with stock 318 and stock 2 barrel carb. thanks guys any input is appreciated.
 
Vacuum Leak? Checking With Brake Carb Or Choke Cleaner....or bad gas? (here comes the jokes!)
 
remove air cleaner and check your accelerator pump shot could be bad check ball or plunger

and would make hard cold start and bog
 
God the car just kinda runs like poop it has good gas super unleaded, I sprayed Carb cleaner on all vacuum connections no idle change, new air filter, I have a timing light if someone knows where if should be and is the farthest forward drivers side cylinder #1. It blows smoke like crazy when revving and smells absolutely horrible I think its just spewing raw fuel if I stand around it or go for a ride I smell of it bad and it burns your eyes. I really wanna get this thing running better some tuning help would be great.
 
Just wanted to add that I just put chalk in my timing mark on my pulley unhooked hose to timing advance and plugged it and hooked up my timing light to #1 cylinder wire and the mark isn't even visible when running with light. Not sure what's up with that I also checked out firing order and everything looks good.
 
Make sure timing light is hooked to # one,also look down the throat of the carb while it's running to be certain no raw fuel is dripping while idleing.
What carb is it?????
 
Where would the fuel be dripping from, it says carter on it and I have the clamp on the wire coming from the the furthest forward on the drivers side. It takes like 30 minutes of driving till it runs right when I take off from a stop or when giving it gas on turns it will stumble and almost stall.
 
Just look while it's running,nothing should be "dripping".
Also check that gas does squirt when the throttle is opened:angel3:
 
It sounds like you have a bunch of normal age related problems
poor accel pump
bad choke pull off
a heat riser not working and a plugged cross over on intake

time to start fixing
 
If the ignition system checks out I would rebuild the Carter and replace the fuel filter.
 
That's the plan ordering a rebuild kit and filter today also some choke parts they are cheap as well might as well change them out and see. Would the heat riser do much don't a lot of people unhook them ?
 
The heat riser pushes the exhaust heat under carb and warms the choke spring to release the choke and make the car driveable cold
LA intakes plug up all the time so you do not get choke heat so choke stays on and runs rich until enough engine heat comes up to take choke off
 
your float is too high and its getting past your needle and seats. youll need to take the top off and bend the tabs on both sides to lower your floats.
 
ok guys well I bought a carb kit and have it all torn down and soaking in the can of carb cleaner for the night. when I removed the carb the mounting bolts and nuts didn't seem very tight actually they seemed kinda loose also all the screws in the carb were also pretty loose feeling. The inside of the carb seemed pretty nasty also there was rust on the butterflies like water had sat in the carb at some point im guessing before I bought the car. I found that the small spring that sits on the top of the accelerator pump shaft was pretty mangled not sure how important it is and as it didnt come in the kit so I'm not really sure where to get another. I've attached some pics you can see how badly mangled that spring is if anyone knows where I can get a replacement that would be greatly appreciated. also the screw that is missing from butterflies was removed by me. You are on the right track I think. The carb probably had significant vacuum leaks. The spring looks like it was pulled out with pliers t one time and caused the spring to stretch. You may be able to bend it back into shape carefully but a new one would be better. You should pull your plugs and replace them as well
 
I had the same problem with the carb on my Ford 351W. It would bog and/or stall when accelerating from a stop, or when going around a corner. I had to adjust the amount of fuel in the bowl as it was too low. It runs fine now.
 
Amazing how someone can mangle such a simple unit. No doubt it's gonna run a lot better when you're done.
 
so I'm trying to figure out what this little spring even does I can't seem to find it in the exploded views of this carb. It sits on the top part of the accelerator pump between a little brass bown that ive posted a picture of here and the plastic cover for the whole thing. Its very strange as it has nothing to do with the pump itself as it had its own spring which alot larger. the only thing i can imagine it would be for would be to keep the little brass bowl in place. the only reason I ask is because I am wondering if it being a little bent up would even cause a problem. Good point and also make sure it doesn't continue dripping out of the booster once you shut the engine off. A dirty air bleed causes that most of the time. Pull the oil dipstick and see if it wreaks of fuel. Oops didn't read the complete thread. The spring returns the pump to a static position for the next shot of fuel.
 
I believe the large spring that sits on the shaft does that but the tiny spring is just way to small for that purpose.
