Hearing aids

I went to miracle ear a month ago and decided I would spring for them. They didn't have a set of demos, but told me they would call me when they had some so I could try them out. They never called, so I am going to Costco next Saturday to have a look at theirs. I have 3 or 4 friends that told me they like the Costco ones best. Although their first ons weren't Miracle ears. They seem to love them and have few complaints. So I think I'm going the Costco route.

Do I have to pee in my pants reading some of these replies ? Holy moley !

when I received my Resound Aids they sat me in front of a computer that had a graph of my hearing ..loss. They played a recording of some guy just saying random words then adjusted the aids somehow after I repeated the words. This happened 4 times for each ear. When it was over the graphs on the screen matched with the ones showing the range I had lost now in line with the other graph, what I assume would be perfect hearing, having brought my 'lost" frequencies up to the straight line. I like them and there are times I don't. It takes some getting used to being able to hear things you haven't in a long time and getting over the feeling like your ears are plugged at the same time. WORTH IT...DO IT!!!

There are still times I can not hear a persons voice tone. It's that particular low soft tone. Driving in a car with the window open I hear the wind sound. Just turn the left ear off (open the battery door) and leave the right ear on, that works. Batteries last me 10 days more or less, (8am. to around 10-11pm.) If I'm by myself and do not need to hear things, turn them off to save the batteries. When the low battery "beep" sounds, take extra batteries with you for the day, it will be that day or the next. I'd think all current aids are 'phone friendly' and adjust for the phone being up at your ear. Of course, I think if the hearing specialist is not wearing aids themselves of any type, how do they really know what it will really be like for that particular person.

Our local companies offer a 45 day trial period. I tried the $6,000. set (small behind the ear pod with clear wire and tiny ear piece. Forget the brand.). For the first time in a long time I heard the turn signal clicking on my wife's Murano. I paid the $6,000. up front and kept them for about 30 days. What I discovered was that in a busy restaurant/setting my ability to distinguish a voice across the table and separate it from the crowd noise was not improved. I went back 3 times for the audiologist to computer tune the aids with very little improvement. In the end I returned them and got a full refund check that day. I live in a retirement community and receive at least 3 full page flyers every week and see full page ads in my local paper everyday. The profit margin on aids has to be gigantic.

I believe the restaurant/bar settings are the worst for these Aids, the acoustics generally are non absorbent of sound. The sound waves bounces around off glass windows, metal structure, tile/cement flooring and the killer is the people have to over talk the next group that needs to over talk the other group. Do these people need to talk loud just to hear themselves over others? It really sucks that my wife has ears like a dog, not big or shaped, just excellent hearing, she can hear what I'm thinking, sometimes.

Do I understand that you tried one pair and never tried any others?

On my second pair of Beltones. Very expensive but worth every penny. My kids were going to disown me and I could not hear my grandkids, that was the worst part. Phone was also a bitch but these tie to Bluetooth so that problem went away. Construction and heredity caused my loss.

Hey Cranium
Question.... Who diagnosed your hearing disorder?
Was it your wife?

If so...

It just may be your built in spam filter, at our age, born in 59.
We have head enough BS in our lives, that we need to cushion the crap that enters, as simple as that.
I can have someone spewing out an hour of, what they think is important information, and my mind may be on a wiring schematic, a future job , money, what ever. I did somewhat listen to what ever someone was saying, got the genuine gist of their little story, however, I did not have to hear every little detail.

Example;
A couple months ago, during dinner the wife was telling me about, every client dealer group she had seen on that particular day..... Yawn....
She noticed I was not paying attention, started to go on about, ME... getting my hearing checked. I then blamed on the spam filters. With that, she got up from the table, walked away, and under her breath said, what an ***....
I responded, I head that!!!!
Now she knows my hearing is just fine.

Read his first post......

Besides the constant ringing in my ears, I will say that the high tones are going away. The only way I can describe it is if you put on a song and turn the treble and mid range way down. I did have an official hearing test about 10 years ago when it started & I'm sure it hasn't gotten any better since. I went for a "free" hearing analysis at Miracle Ear & I know that it's just a sales pitch. Their "cheap" hearing aids are 5 grand and the top of the line ones are 7 grand. Before I spend that kind of dough, I want to get other opinions. ....And I do plan on going to my primary doctor & have him set up a professional hearing test for me.

just buy a bigger funnel with a longer neck :popcorn:

As I posted before, the Phonack's that I wear seem to be excellent for hearing in a crowd. I cant speak to the cost but they operate well and are easy to maintain. Mine were also computer adjusted for my particular hearing loss profile. They can be re adjusted later as well.

Not exactly. I've tried a few that friends have lent me. Most only amplified ALL noise. A couple of others didn't offer trial periods, so I didn't get any farther than that...
Years of race cars with aluminum interiors and open headers didn't help.

None of the above.

What I want to avoid are the aids that just make everything louder.-- Friends of mine have been very disappointed and tend to leave their aids in a drawer at home. A waste of effort and money IMO.

Volume is not my hearing issue. It is higher frequencies that are missing.
When I rent a movie (for example) most of the imporntant details in the dialog is missed. I need to use the subtitle option to understand an otherwise loud sound volume.

Maybe the world of proper hearing aids is still young and that may justify their high cost?
Maybe it is all about demand?

When we look at what our phones can do for $5 or $7 hundred dollars I am miffed at spending ten times that to get iffy/maybe improvement on my hearing.

OK I went to costco and had thier test. I think you should go there and try it out. The main difference In product was the seimans based from miracle have a tinnitus filter. I have extreme tinnitus. I was told the filter in the Miracle brand was a back ground noise to mask your own ringing. I didn't think I needed more back ground noise. I tried 3 sets of aids at costco and decided on some tiny ones that go in my ear and not behind my ear. In the long run I might buy them & the Kirkland brand. I can get both sets for 1/2 the cost of M.E.s I do know when I wore the aids in Costco I heard jibber jabber from folks all around the store. I heard the roof top units blowing. I could hear my wife talking. I know all these things could be a (jokingly negative thing) but they put a smile on my face. Why you ask? Well I guess it was because I wasn't getting my *** chewed out for ignoring my bride.
