I,m gonna change my cam...I have the good ole purple shaft 509 cam in my car now...Heres some specs on the engine...440 bored 30 over, edelbrock performer heads, hooker ceramic 1 7/8 headers with a edelbrock performer intake with a edebrock 800 cfm carb..I,m runnin msd distributor and 6al box...The cam I have seems to be for a higher compression engine..I think I need to go to a more modern comp cam...I,m also upgrading lifters to harland and sharp...I need more umph!!!Oh yeah tci 2400 stall convertor...Any input would really be apreciated!!!Thanks guys!!!

When we were running ours for racing, we used (hold on to your hats boys and girls) an old Erson grind..... Yup, 472 lift with a 309 duration w/ 9.5-1 flat tops. We did the 440 30 over also with a torquer intake, 750 DP and Hedman headers with stock electronic ignition and a chrome box. With 4.11's, it would pull all the way through the quarter in the low 12's.

If you have 8:1 CR then your choices are really limited. I'm running the MoPar .455" / 272 in my 10:1 440 and you saw the results at Sac Raceway recently. If your pistons are down in the hole about .100" then you really should pop a set of 915's with a steel shim gasket to get nearly another point of compression. Otherwise you are bound to the Edelbrock perf cam (or equivalent) designed for low CR engines. I'd say 3.55 gears will be a great choice for that motor.

I running the comp xe 274 in my 440 with edebrock rpm intake, headers, 2400 stall and 3.23 gears. I am very impressed how hard it pulls from bottom end all the way to 6000. Loads of bottom end torq and has a good sound at idle.

What gears?
Why limit yourself to Comp cams? They are Chevy guys!!! What about Engle, hughes, lunati?
My suggestion depending on gear.
Hughes 2332 (1st choice, hot street cam)
Lunati 60302 OR 60303

If you are stuck on Comp.
274 or 275xe

With your bigger cam and headers, I would recommend installing 4* adv to get some low end.

Pretty nice combo btw.....Im guessing at least 3.91's out back?

You might even consider calling and talking to Don at FBO (4secondsflat.com), he runs a speed shop for MOPARS and is hooked up with Racer Brown, he custom ground my camshaft. He'll grind it to match what you have and what you want.

I think you are right....I,ll give him a call..

If your compression is so low I would look at a blower ( Paxton or Procharger). Get an appropriate cam.
