If I remember, I believe that was stamped where the bell housing and trans meet? Does that make sense?Where is the 5-26-66 stamp located that you just posted??
I know that mine has been rebuilt as I have the dyno sheets.

On some 68s , yesIf I remember, I believe that was stamped where the bell housing and trans meet? Does that make sense?
Good call. My engine paint is 50/50 age anyway so I thought worth the while to scrape just in case. Eh.My pad is mostly blank too so I’ve not bothered to remove the paint. It think the water test stamp (WT) is visible through the paint but that’s it. It was possibly milled when rebuilt. Nice paint coverage though.

Didn’t find a VIN on the rear near the oil pressure ports on mine either. But I think that was kind of hit or miss on 68s. Seems to be a lot of variations on stampings for these motors.
Is that down underneath just in front of the removable clutch plate? If so that would seem to be your engine assembly date (my guess?). Why it’s such different format from mine which is based on the 10,000 day calendar we can only guess. Were there 2 plants that could have assembled Hemis- or only 1? Anyone know?
My guess is that’s blank (lower flange area) on your engine because the assembly date is on the top pad. Interesting though that your engine has what appears to be a VIN by the oil sender ports on top. That would tend to date it to sometime in mid-68 or later I guess.

I have not found a VIN on my block. I’ve looked at the oil port area closely with a camera scope and later when I removed the intake. I’m thinking that the engine build date of Dec 20, 1967 is before they began stamping the VIN on the block in 1968.
Google says 426 Hemis were built in Highland Park, Michigan and Madison Heights, Michigan in 1968. The consensus on my blocks build date was that it was built at Madison Heights. Maybe the 2 plants had different stamping procedures for awhile?
All Hemis are HP, regardless of yearIf the engine build date is 1966, does that mean it cannot be an actual HP?
I think he means "HP2" car badging.... that said, we've already determined that the engine is not original to the car, as it was built / cast in 1966 not 1965.All Hemis are HP, regardless of year
CorrectOk. So the HP2 is just badging for cars built up to around Dec ‘65? I think that’s what I was mixing up?
My original '66 Imperial had the B440 stamp on that pad location. My engine does not have a vin on either location.
simply the date on the raised pad below the coil. Which is where all 1966 and I think 67 engines as well
66 application will be BH ( same as mine )
67 allplication will be CH
Those pics of vins I posted are of engine Ive grabbed off the net.
